FSN's local affiliate, FSN Houston, launched the promotional campaign Friday and will continue unveiling various facets through next week to honor the second baseman's historic achievement. The network said its typical marketing plans are based on teams, but it wanted to do something special for the future Hall of Famer's historic hit. "This is an opportunity for us to reach out and, for the first time, implement a hyper-local marketing approach using a player with such outstanding character as Craig Biggio as he chases a milestone," said FSN Senior Vice President of Marketing Dan Dieffenbach, who oversees all marketing activities for FSN's 18 owned-and-operated regional sports networks. "We've created a plan that will connect with Houston fans, while providing added-value for our team partner, the Astros. Local sports are the backbone of FSN's regional networks. The Biggio campaign reinforces our commitment to our local markets." The multifaceted plan -- valued at more than $200,000 -- includes countdown billboards set up Friday at Highway 59 and Polk, Interstate 45 South and Fannin, I-10 West at Silber and West Loop 610 and Westview. The count will be updated regularly with Biggio's progress. A billboard at Highway 59 and Buffalo Speedway called "Hit. Field. Care.," praises Biggio's on- and off-the-field contributions to Houston, including the Sunshine Kids children's cancer charity for which Biggio is the national spokesman. A 30-second spot called "The Streak" will run at the Alvin Cinema 5 (324 East House, Alvin), Pearland Premiere Cinema (5050 West Broadway, Pearland) and Tomball Premiere Cinema 6 (28497 Tomball Parkway, Tomball) beginning June 15 through the month. Movie-goers to the three theaters will be given a special commemorative Biggio movie card highlighting his career stats. Two 51-by-5-foot banners draped on the outside of Minute Maid Park will have removable numbers that will be updated each time Biggio gets a hit. All creative elements from the campaign will be posted on a special Biggio countdown page on the Houston Astros Web site (www.astros.com/biggio3000). http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2007/06/04/daily67.html?surround=lfn --- Hope he gets to 3000 sooner rather than later. It would look bad if he's still chasing it going late into the season.
