Anyone else hear the "NBA guru" so confidently proclaim that the Rockets would have nearly $20 million in cap space once the Dream retired?

Didn't our capologists conclude a few weeks back we'd have about $3-$5mill?

I should have included the [sarcasm]....[/sarcasm].

The point I was trying to make is that David Aldrige is a dumbass.

    thaCabbagePatch...

Now, Im not sure. I barely caught the end of that piece. But I thought he was referring to once Hakeem retires after the 2001 season. Walts deal would be up also, No TMass, Rogers, Macleans deal would be out the door, and maybe Drew.

That Makes for roughly 26 million in cap space. Now that doesn't address Mobleys pending new deal(s). A wink-wink with Anderson which should happen once Hakeem retires, and the possiblity of resigning Rogers. Or for that matter having much of a team.

I believe the only people under contract for year after Hakeem retires are

    Francis
    Anderson
    Cato
    Bullard
    Maloney

with a strong possibility of Mobley.

So if he meant once Hakeem retires after his deal he is correct. If he meant him retiring after this season, he is far from correct.

I remember [Heypartner/You/Davo/Aelliot/and Others] had some long discussion about this...I really wish we could get some official clarification on this. Aldridge's word means nothing to me. Perhaps Clutch, you can question one of your Rocket contacts?

Dream retires after 2000-2001 season scenario:

    SA ...........................redone contract
Cat (or his replacement)......4 million @ yr?
Drew (or his replacement)....+2 million @ yr?
    team-opt for 2002
    Rogers........................2002....contract expires
    Walt..........................2002....contract expires
    Francis.......................still under contract
    Thomas........................still under contract
    Cato..........................still under contract

Rogers + Walt + Francis + Thomas + Cato should be at roughly 19 - 20 million for the 2001-2002 season.

Factor in deals for SA + Cat(?)+ Drew(?) and that will put the Rockets well over 30 million.

Future draft choices and various other players (exemptions + minimum) should easily be worth another 5 - 6 million.

Salary Cap for 2001-2002 could be in the 40 million neighborhood. It looks like 36 million or better in salary, so about 4 million to play with. How does the timing for a restructured SA deal impact things?
Any unfinished business from previous years is left out of these calculations.

Feel free to point out any mistakes.
