Do I have to learn Chinese to be a true Rockets fan? I didn't question this in the past, but it is starting to get to me.

I have to force myself to finish reading it, mostly yesterday's news and redundant stuff. Seems like some journalist's BS just to fill up the space.

The original post makes perfect sense if you know how the bball system works in China, and the culture behind it. It's so hard to understand it from an American's position, but I'll try to explain it anyway :)

Basically, there are two points in the original post; first, everyon on the Chinese side is aware that Yao is very valuable, and his value only can be fully appreciated when he plays in the NBA. The other point is that there has been no signed agreement or contract between the Rockets and the Chinese side, nor between Ming/his agent and his Chinese team. Everything is based on the good faith, a verbal agreement.

This comes as no surprise to anyone who is familar with the Chinese system, or who followed ZhiZhi Wang's journey to Dallas.
Ming's situation should be a little better than Wang since he is a civilian, but not that much.

Unlike NBA, a player is the property of the team for HIS LIFE in CBA. The only way a player can leave the team is by retirement, or be released. Known this, there is no way the Sharks would let Ming go without huge compensation. Because of the public pressure, the Sharks had no choice but let Yao go, but with a lot of strings attached. NBA prohibits anything other than a $350,000 one time payment to a player's formal team, which is far less than what Yao's worth to the Sharks and the CBA. Yao is one of the biggest draw in CBA's ticket sale, naturally, they want more in return.

We don't know exactly what the Rockets agreed, or disagreed, but I definitely sure that quite a few things the Sharks requested cannot be offered by the Rockets under the NBA rule. I believe this is why there is no written agreement/contract yet between them.

If the problem between the Sharks and the Rockets/Yao is compensation, then the problem between CBA and the Rockets is the commitment, which is far complicated than the compensation part. Unlike NBA players, it's every Chinese player's duty and obligation to play for his contry/State/City in the competition. I can see following events where Yao was expected to participate,
Olympics, once every 4 year; --- for team China
World Basketball Championships, every 2 years -- team China
Asia Championships --- every 2 years -- team China
China National Sports tournament, every 4 years -- Shanghai

Obviously, that's a lot of commitment for the Rockets to make, and I don't believe the Rockets want to commit all of those. But for the Chinese side, that's the minimum they are expecting.
Given the situation and the expectation on both sides, I can understand why there is no written agreement so far.

I am an optimistic person, I still expect Yao to be in the Rockets uniform next year, but it won't be as smooth a ride as many of you expected.

If you don't have a translator, the original post looks like this

(^*$^$*&_()_)&&*$%$@$!@%$*&_ etc. It is unreadable to those of us who speak English.

Rocketsauce and Old Man Rock pulled out parts of the text and pretended like they could read them and treating them like a normal post. Since none of us can read them, it was REALLY funny.

Point is, none of us who speak English can read the original post in this thread without some sort of translation device. Unlike what windandsea usually posts, this just looks like a random set of characters to us, not anything readable.

All right, seems the worker ant windandsea is finally on vacation. Let me chime in on the key points of this article.

    1. Yao Ming is an employee of the Shanghai Sharks. Obviously, he needs to be released by the Sharks first as the NBA only signs free agents. The reason he needs permit from the basketball administration center(BAC) of the Chinese Sports Bureau is that as an international player, Yao needs clearance from FIBA to be a free agent. The condition for FIBA to issue such clearance is that the BAC of China issues a certificate proving him as an free agent first.
    2. Like other posters said, there is no written agreement between BAC and Houston Rockets, nor between BAC and Yao Ming's agent as for going back and play for the Chinese national team. All agreement in this regard is verbal and not finalized on paper. Concrete date for paperwork is unknown so far.
    3. For Yao Ming to play in CBA he must register in BAC first. To BAC's understanding, Yao Ming is a member of CBA and BAC regulates the CBA, therefore Yao Ming needs to present explanation on going abroad to the BAC and share part of his earnings with it, up to 50% of his salary.

The situation is clearly best for Yao Ming and the Rockets. No formal agreement with BAC means once Yao Ming lands on the American soil he can do whatever he pleases, including playing for the Chinese national team. Let me just pray what the article said is true.
