While waiting for my movie to start (The Grudge) I sneeked in to see a little bit of Friday Night Lights. I catched the last part of the movie were the Permian Tigers of Odessa Texas were playing in the Astrodome against Dallas Carter. My question is if this movie was a true story or was it based on a book?

Based on the book by HG Bissinger. However, the movie leaves out tons of stuff that's covered in the book like the people, politics, and environment of West Texas.

Definitely one of the top-5 sports books ever.

    Read it.

They are the Permian Panthers, by the way. Just to be accurate.

I liked the movie, but this is my main problem with it.

I live 15 minutes away from Odessa and graduated from Lee High School here in Midland. High school football is a religion here and Lee is the Panthers biggest rival. You may have caught the game two Thursdays ago on national tv supposedly viewed from LA to Maine. Supposedly it was exposed to over 75 million viewers.

If you have any questions about West Texas...you can email me.

I think I remember reading part of that book. What I remember was how ruthless and racist some of the football boosters were, and how little they cared when someone got hurt, as long as their team won, and if their team lost, you were dead to them.

It was sort of like a small update to James Michener's book, Sports in America.
