Since the other thread makes the underlying assumption that Muslims themselves have the complete freedom to worship in those supposed "Islamic countries", I thought it may behoove us to discuss the fact that many Muslims, let alone non-Muslims, have been unable to exercise their own religious freedoms in lands where they are the majority by all counts. This may some paradoxical at first, but when you think about it it makes sense, given the fact that Islamic countries have, overwhelmingly, dictatorial regimes which seek to dominate every aspect of life within the lands which they rule. In fact, in some cases, those very regimes which are so oppressive to the majority seek to champion minority rights as a tool of foreign policy, so that they can seek to impress their foreign patrons and garner the full support of Western governments, which more often than not grant those oppressive regimes their blessings as long as they remain 'secular' and treat minorities and women well (pretty much the entire history of the Arab world in the 20th century).

A friend of mind told me once something that made a lot of sense: how can you call for minority rights in the Arab world when the majority have yet to secure their own rights? It is certainly counter-intuitive, is it not?

    It certainly is.

I always tell my friends that religion is extremely restricted in many Middle Eastern countries. They don't recognize it because usually THEIR form of religion is not restricted.

It's a terrible thing and only improving in some countries. In other countries (Indonesia) it's getting worse. In the UAE, it's getting better. In Saudi, I can't see how it will change unless oil becomes useless or depleted.

    It's really a sad situation.

What is the need for incessant calls of religious freedom and general freedom for the minority or even for the majority in that manner? It is a Western thought indoctrinated by the white man. In the Western world freedom and religious freedom might be a sought after prize, but not everyone deserves freedom. When lawlessness and corruption reign free amongst the general population, these people must be ruled by the iron fist of the government.

If the population is not worthy of freedom, then there is no reason for the leaders to grant them this favour. This is especially true in areas where there is no elected official. If the leader is not elected by the general populace, I see no reason why any leader would ever think of granting any sort of freedom to his people.

What good is it in allowing a minority race to practice their religion or culture? This will only undermine the greater good of the ruling parties in power. If you want to remain in power you must rule fairly, yet strictly.

When passing judgement on foreign lands, the Westerner must first remove his Anglo Saxonic-tinted glasses.
