[freakish thought] Landry dumping originated from bad blood from RFA talks?

Does anyone think that the trading of Landry, a perfect fit next to yao with AMAZING efficiency numbers second to none, leading the nba in 4th quarter scoring for the first half of the season before landing in the 2nd spot after LEBRON took him, a young and up and coming big man who can only become more dominant and draw more attention, possibly the best nonstarter in the league, been dumped as a result of those longstanding, bitter, frustrating, time consuming talks between morey and his agent, TWICE, while carl was looking for his first rookie contract and then his 2nd contract afterwards?

-landry, and his agent, was very unhappy morey only offered him a one year contract worth little over 400000k, as his agent claimed that most other second rounders get a 3 year deal with the first two years guaranteed while landry only had a one year nonguaranteed deal?

-landrys agent argued as the 31st pick of the whole draft, first pick in the second round, landry deserved much more than what he received

-landry wasnt signed until something like october for that rookie contract while everyone else had long signed their contract (most rookie deals are done within the first half of july)

-landry, for his second contract, wanted a big deal from the rockets. however as an RFA he had little room to argue

-morey had apparently lowballed him and his agent

-his agent finally got charlotte to sign him to an offer sheet, again this dragged out long and tirelessly

-morey was never able to come to an agreement for landry long after negotiations started.

-landry finally signed with charlotte in september, long after everyone else had signed with their new deals.

BITTER ENDING TO A LONG DRAGGED OUT DRAMA?

    Landry's being overrated.

In the past few games the opposing D has started focusing more on him and his production has slipped rapidly.

He's also not been a great rebounder. He's just scored.

And that, exactly, is what we need the most, isn't it?

Tracy McGrady, zero trade value for a team (Kings) not desperate to salary dump.

Morey didn't lowball Landry. He met his market price that was set by the Bobcats.

Under normal circumstances Landry would be on a 3yr min salary level deal. Instead he's now on a $9M contract. I doubt he's unhappy about that situation.

I agree with what you say but, I think in a business sense it's only appropriate to try to get the best value of a player at lowest cost possible. It's not really about low balling-- a rookie, or first year player.

I bet if Landry was to sign a contract much larger than what Morey had given him in the beginning, then most likely we won't be able to get the likes of some other young players or role players to stay here.

It's all in the business to get the most out of your players, plus Carly Landry will get big bucks 2-3 years down the road anyway when he's a 'verteran', he'll be ok.

Disagree. Landry needs the ball to have any sort of impact, and he's not going to get many touches playing with Yao. He doesn't have much of a rebounding or defensive impact. As far as a PF prototype goes I feel like he's about the worst to pair with Yao. Still love him though, and thought he would have been great to have off the bench next year, until he left for money than we would want to pay him in 2011.

I dont think it was the RFA drama that would have made bad blood. If its true that DM was trying to over emphasize Landry's knee problems to make him less appealing to other teams, then that would have been a problem after next season.

Say what? Landry is the master at moving without the ball be it screen and roll or making backdoor cuts for a slam.

Fact is that Landry is a better player for the Rockets than Martin is. Yet, we trade him and our cap space/luxury tax reliever for a guy who won't help us.

    Great deal.

I guess I just don't see this as much as you. Seems like the majority of his points come off face-ups or post-ups.

Not if we have Yao and Kevin Martin and Aaron Brooks (i.e., three better scorers than him).

And Kevin Martin is a better scorer than Landry.

I'm sad about losing Landry, but I don't think the Rockets would have met his asking price next offseason anyway- and with the history of contentious negotiations with his agent, it really seems like he was going to be gone regardless.

Maybe the team is looking to move more of the scoring load to the guards and trying to get some more size and rebounding at the PF position. As great as Landry was, he's undersized and is not a great rebounder for his position. Landry was grabbing 5.5 RB per game. Kevin Martin is only averaging about 1 per game less (albeit in a few more minutes). The Rockets are getting more boards/min from David Andersen than from Landry.

Depending on other moves, this could work out really well for both the Rockets and Landry. I may be wrong, but it looks to me like the PF position for the Rockets just went from being a relative strength to a weakness:

    PF: Scola/Landry/Dorsey/Cook

    to

PF: Scola/The Ghost of Kenny Thomas/Cook

hopefully Morey can pry Hill or a good pick away from the Knicks to fill out the PF spot.

    The Kings asked for Landry.
    The Knicks asked for Cook.

Morey thought keeping Cook was more important.

You won't need a good scorer with Yao Ming around. What you need is someone more balanced, someone who can help Yao rebound and defend but can also score by himself when the opponent fronts Yao. That someone is Scola.

How is Landry a better player than Kevin Martin? Landry is a tough guy and a great scorer but his rebounding is abysmal, and his defense is below average, and his passing isn't all that special. Up until he got injured and replaced by Tyreke, Kmart has been one of the most efficient scorers in the league. The fact that he sucks this year really is a blessing in disguise for us, as it will cause us to miss the playoffs and get a high lottery pick. The draft this year is PF heavy, so you might get your Landry replacement sooner than you think.

carls rebounding has been phenomenal to say the least

here is the current 09-10 seasons rebounding leaders for offensive rebounding:

    Offensive Rebound Pct
    1. Brendan Haywood-TOT 14.0
    2. Ben Wallace-DET 13.8
    3. Zach Randolph-MEM 13.5
    4. Joakim Noah-CHI 13.0
    5. Samuel Dalembert-PHI 12.9
    6. Tim Duncan-SAS 12.6
    7. Marcus Camby-LAC 12.2
    8. Emeka Okafor-NOH 12.2
    9. Dwight Howard-ORL 12.0
    10. Jason Thompson-SAC 11.4
    11. Anderson Varejao-CLE 11.1
    12. Pau Gasol-LAL 10.9
    13. Andrew Bogut-MIL 10.0
    14. Jonas Jerebko-DET 10.0
    15. Brook Lopez-NJN 9.9
    16. Marc Gasol-MEM 9.9
    17. Chris Bosh-TOR 9.8
    18. Elton Brand-PHI 9.8
    19. Carl Landry-HOU 9.5
    20. Andrew Bynum-LAL 9.2

Quite frankly, Scola gets more isolation postups than anyone on this team. And Scola can only hit wide open midrange jumpers. Carl can hit a midrange jumper easily with a defender in his face pulling up as he did several times during that last game in Milwaukee. Its easy to see why landry has been much better.

defense? carl is nothing like a defensive liability. in fact, he is the leader shot blocker on our team!!! he gets 1 block per game while only getting something like 25 minutes per game.

I have a hard time criticising carl about his defense or rebounding

He averages 3 defensive rebounds per game...7 total rebounds in 36 minutes. Yes, he's a good offensive rebounder due to hustle and put backs of his own misses. 7 total rebounds in 36 minutes is TERRIBLE for a PF, especially for a team that has no tall center to steal rebounds. Phenomenal rebounding? Seriously?

It also has to be factored in that Landry gets more opportunities to play against scrubs than a starter would.

And 1 block a game is nothing. Of course he'll get a block here and there with his jumping ability. But it's not like he's affecting shots left and right. His impact in discouraging shots in the paint is not strong enough to even be considered significant.

He does play next to a phenomenal defensive rebounder which takes away a huge amount of defensive rounds away from him. But other than that, offensive rebounding is more important than defensive rebounds due to it earning the team extra vital possessions, resulting in higher percentage shots such as putbacks and layups and dunks coming off offensive rebounds. Carl, if you watch him play often, is often the first big man running down the court looking for fastbreak dunks and layups often outpacing the other teams big men with his pace and his speed. Our transition offense would be much more ineffective with carl not sprinting the floor as soon as he sees an opportunity for a fast break. Hence this reduces the amount of defensive rebounds he can get. If you go back to his rookie season, he got a whopping 6.1 rebounds in his paltry 18 minutes per game(I knew this off by heart as I was astounded by its amazingness). Scola on the other hand just hangs around the basket gulping down all those misses and then jogs down the court after he secures the rebound. Thats why you always see carl with all those dunks and layups on fastbreaks and not scola. If aaron brooks always went to rebound instead of running ahead for a fastbreak Im sure he could get more than 2 rebounds per 35 minutes.

Regarding blocks. Well Carl is the leading shotblocking on the team at the moment.

That may be bad, but everyone else is just worse. So tahts gotta be good. Carl is the best we had in terms of shotblocking and now hes gone for peanuts.

I get trading Landry. He was a our most valued asset (after maybe Aaron Brooks), and to get a good player in a trade you have to be willing to part with such a player. The Rockets felt he was more replaceable. Maybe not this year, but going into next year.

I just wish that the big prize was something better than Kevin Martin. Its a bit underwhelming.

His buckets will impress you. He gets to the line a lot too. Lowry like but hit's 40% of his 3's.

Doesn't a defensive rebound help against the opposition getting offensive rebounds?

I wonder what Brooks value is? If Landry was Martin than what does this make Brooks?
