weisbrod is a "steve francis guy". would you give up steve for carter? why or why not? orl sen article Francis-for-Carter deal doesn't thrill Weisbrod By Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted September 21, 2004 Vince Carter wants to replace cousin Tracy McGrady as the leader and star of the Orlando Magic. It's not going to happen. Carter, from Daytona Beach Mainland High, is growing increasingly disgruntled in Toronto, where he has spent the first six years of his NBA career establishing himself as a star. He asked for a trade earlier this summer, making it clear to both the Raptors and the Magic that his destination of first choice for a new home would be Orlando. Although the two teams have had preliminary talks about Carter, the Magic do not have the interest it would take to make it happen. In any deal for Carter, the Raptors want another all-star, which with the Magic would be newly acquired point guard Steve Francis. "There just aren't many scenarios you could draw up where we'd be a better team in acquiring him," Magic General Manager John Weisbrod said, "not when you factor in whom we would have to trade. I can say in no uncertain terms, we would not trade Steve Francis for Vince Carter." Carter averaged 22.5 points last season compared with 16.6 points for Francis, who was acquired from Houston in the multi-player trade of McGrady earlier this summer. Both Carter and Francis are all-stars, but in the eyes of Weisbrod, there is no comparison. "The more I'm around him, the more I'm a Steve Francis guy," Weisbrod said. "Don't get me wrong, Vince is an unbelievable athlete, but I'd rather have Steve Francis. Steve is a warrior." Like a lot of teams, the Magic are concerned about Carter's toughness and his ability to make those around him better. The Raptors won just 24 and 33 games the past two seasons. Carter's desire to return to his home state to play isn't going to happen anytime soon. Heat President Pat Riley also expressed little interest last week in Carter. Carter wasn't available to comment. He was expected to be at the Tracy McGrady charity softball game Saturday at Walt Disney Wide World of Sports, but he canceled that appearance.
This is some nice stuff for Stevie. I am happy for him to read stuff like this. I wish him luck and all the best with Orlando.
As Bark would say "HALF MAN HALF SEASON" the man is made of glass...I would take Steve over Vince any day..
NO! Is there a need to explain my reason? They're even not counterpart in my mind. Besides, Carter's injury-prone...
I'm not much of a Francis fan myself, but no way would I trade him for Carter. For all his faults, no doubt he is a warrior, something that can't exactly be said about Carter.
Aside from just basketball wise, I think keeping Steve over VC in Orlando makes sense. Weisbrod's "warrior" comparison is spot on, IMO. Besides, they have an impressionable, young "superstar-to-be" in Dwight Howard. Who would you rather have around him, VC (injured, disgruntled easily, doesn't seem to be a leader, etc) or Stevie (stands up for Boki against Malone, Yao against Stoudemire, etc.). Sure Steve can be too emotional sometimes but he's a better model for Dwight Howard than VC.
First Steve was unhappy for the idea of playing in Vancouver. Then he was angry about having to play for the Magic. I would truely feel sorry for a guy with his emotions to get traded to Toronto of all places. I think he'll have a great career in Orlando, especially after Grant Hill retires.
good to hear some love for steve. he is definitely a warrior on the court. as far as weisbrod comments go, based on what he said during the t-mac trade is it safe to assume that carter is already in orlando?
Wow, this thread has Macbeth written all over it. Three years ago I would have said Carter in a heartbeat, and that was after Steve was coming off an unbelievable individual season. But now, even if I knew Carter was going to be healthy it would depend on the team.
I was looking at some other boards and they were talking about the article, all of them agreed that they would NEVER give up Francis for Carter for that one simple reason: Francis plays with heart no matter how bad things are looking. I'm glad people are starting to appreciate that.
Carter Sucks, gimme francis any day. Im sure Francis would just sit out if he was moved to Canada again.
Think about Orlando's situation--from what they say, they just got rid of an athletic yet disgruntled F/G who, even though he was the league leading scorer, didn't have the team's support and didn't win games and wanted out. If anything, bringing in Steve signifies a change in direction plus there's chemistry between the 3 ex-Rox. Why in the world would they trade for a lesser version of what they just traded away???
VC has never returned to his pre-injury form, demonstrated that he's prissy, and has become a soft jump shooter that has never truly gained the respect from his teammates that a leader needs. Vince Carter: 1999-2001: 26.7 PPG, 6.7 FTA/g 2002-2004: 21.6 PPG, 4.7 FTA/g I'm including FTA/g since it's an indication of how aggressive a player is on offense. Your chances of winning a game go way up if you can draw fouls, get and-1 opportunites and get the other team in foul trouble. It's a big reason why Allen Iverson (9.5/g last year) and Paul Pierce (8.6/g over last 4 years) can keep their teams in games by themselves, especially in the 4th quarter, and why guys like Rasheed Wallace (3.1/g) and Webber (5.2/g over last 2 seasons) always seem to disappear in the clutch. Steve averaged 7.3 FTA the year before JVG handcuffed him. Jordan: 6.8 FTA/g (career), 10.1/g in 86-87. Evan
As much as I hated Steve last year and this year until we got rid of him, I'd have to keep him over Carter. This is mostly based on the fact that Carter has had a number of injuries over the last few years that has sent him downhill. I don't know if it would be different, but if you looking from an owners point of view it may be different because Carter could probably put more people in the seats with his name alone. Of course if he can't play that could be a problem. Pugs
