Last night (6/15/01) I was flipping channels at I think it was either 11:25 or 11:55, and Steve Francis was on a show called "Lighthouse TV". It is a Christian show. I only caught the end of it. Francis was talking about how we should dedicate our lives 100% to God and a lot of good stuff. Since I'm a born again Christian I was thrilled to hear this. I'm not sure if it's a re-print. If anyone here saw the entire show, please tell me what other things he said and I'd apreciate it. ------------------ The Highest Leapers in the NBA

Yeah, let's have more drugs, wife beatings, adultery, child abuse, DUIs, x-rated rap songs, racism, bigotry, etc. There are a lot of things worse than religion in sports. ------------------
why not????? ------------------ http://www.al-gore-2004.org/ mgh 1924-2001 [This message has been edited by dc rock (edited June 17, 2001).]
Because some people who aren't religious, like myself, get sick of hearing: "Well first I'd like to thank god" in every single interview. I wish more athletes could be like Hakeem. He doesn't force his religion onto anyone else. That's just the way I feel about it, no offense. And there's nothing wrong with X rated rap songs or drugs. ------------------ Protrolls.com! ZRB - I can respect that, that's your choice. I am sorry that Christianity has turned you off, I assume that is because of some Christians that you have encountered. If you ever have any questions about Christianity or God in general, please feel free to email me: rocketfan@tamu.edu Please don't take this as a 'force', just an invitation if you ever have any questions, or just want someone to vent to. themoandfroshow: What channel (name of the channel, not the channel number) was this 'Lighthouse TV' on? ------------------ It's Clutch's City and we're all just living in it...
I think it's safe to say that intolerance and bigotry in the name of religion has caused more deaths and malfeasance than drugs or gangsters. Lets just start with the inquisition and the crusades. I can expound further if you'd like. As for religion preventing adultry, I have two words: Jim Baker. Don't get me wrong, true religion is a good and beautiful thing, there's just something wrong with alot of religious people specificaly those who are most vocal. In my experience these are the most hypocritial and least pious. Prove your belief in the diety of your choice by your actions and it will have real meaning. And if anyone really thinks that God, Buddah, Allah, the Godhead, Zoroaster, the Great Earth Spirit, Shiva, the spirits of our ancestors, Odin, Zeus et. al. was 'with us tonite' intervening and helping them to win a game... well I think they have a slightly inflated sense of self-worth. ------------------
ZRB, they're not "forcing" anything onto you, they're simply thanking God. I don't see what the big deal is. In my opinion drugs are bad. How can taking drugs help you. All it does is wreck peoples lives. I'm sure their are some cases(very few) where marajuana could help glaucoma or cancer or whatever, but other than that drugs are useless. ------------------
So there should be no religion in sports at all because you feel it is being forced on you? ------------------ http://www.al-gore-2004.org/ mgh 1924 - 2001 [This message has been edited by dc rock (edited June 17, 2001).]
Even though Im not religious I like what I hear. I do want to say just because your not a religious person does not make you a bad person and just because you are doesent make you a good person,I have lots of family and a few friends that talk to me about God all the time,I listen to what they say but they can not change the way I feel.I am currently reading the Bible for my 2nd time and enjoy it but I still dont believe,I wished I did,but if I just say I believe that would be wrong!I also never try to talk people out of there beliefs as I feel Im doing something wrong! Oh and I think if it wasent for Religon the world would be in chaos. ------------------ AKA Rendiggler Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy
Oh and I think if it wasent for Religon the world would be in chaos. Do you honestly believe that? Kind of ironic you say that considering how much death has been caused by organized religion. ------------------
I, myself, am not a religious person and feel the same way you do about athletes and God. So I don't understand why you have a problem with an athlete going on a religious show (on a Christian channel) to discuss it. That is where it belongs. Not all over a sports broadcast. Good for Steve. ------------------ "If you don't understand it, don't try to understand it." -Carl Everett
Yes I truly do believe that TPL,even though you have a good point also, you have to think of what the world would be like if NO ONE believed in an after life, there would be no cosequences and people would think they could roam the earth and do what they please,I think that organized religon has had MANY problem in the history of the world but they do create order, just my opinion. ------------------ AKA Rendiggler Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy...Sam Clancy
Sorry, I misunderstood. The last thing I want to do is get into a religious debate. Unless it's in the hangout forum. Just let me say that the fight to get drugs illegally is what causes violence, not drugs themselves. If people could attain drugs legally, there would be no need for drug traficking and such. ------------------ Protrolls.com! Just let me say that the fight to get drugs illegally is what causes violence, not drugs themselves. If people could attain drugs legally, there would be no need for drug traficking and such. Bingo. I could really go into this, but I'll save it for the hangout forum. Ren, You don't have to believe in organized religion to believe in an afterlife(see Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Payne, etc.), but I don't want to get into it. I'll save my religious rants for another time. ------------------
Yeah, cause that's exactly what ZRB said. I just really think that a lot of these athletes really think they won because they prayed harder or something. That's the impression I get when they say they thank God. You never hear someone say "I wanna thank God for tripping me up behind the line of scrimmage." (thank you Carlin) I have nothing against players being religious or even displaying their Christianity, just don't act like the fact that you are religious help lead you to victory. God has more important things on his minds. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin

First, let me say that I am glad Steve was on a Christian show rather than having some girl on Jerry Springer talking about him "being her babies daddy"...(ala Shawn Kemp, etc.) Now that I have addressed the thread topic let me also say how impressed I am with the sheer volume of responses in this thread that reflect my own feelings on religion, drug prohibition, etc. Ottomaton / ZRB / and Ren Cooper to name those most prominent: Ottomaton, I single you out for the most props for stating eloquently and with historical perspective the damage religion has reeked upon mankind. Although there are miles of words that can be(and have been)written on these topics, this is clearly not the proper forum for this dialogue. However, for those of you with special interest in the Drug Prohibition issue, may I direct you to www.dpft.org. ------------------ Our purpose in life is to find our gift, and the meaning of life is to give it away!
Jeff, I agree, this thread got off topic, can it be moved to the hangout or do we have to start a new thread over there? I would like to continue with some more thoughts, but I don't want to lengthen this thread in the wrong forum. ------------------ It's Clutch's City and we're all just living in it...
