Can't get this one out of my head. Was drunk the other night after the Smeg game and an infamous cc.net poster brought it up. If Kidd says he's leaving NJ but doesn't want to leave them with nothing, who can offer a better sign and trade than the Rockets? Not SA. That's for sure. Kidd's clearly the better player right now, but Steve's got more years in him and room to grow. NJ would have to be interested. I'm a big Steve fan and believe he'll get better and better. I'm not looking to move him (or move him to the 2), but I'd have to consider it if we'd get Kidd. The Rockets could leave the rest of the roster intact and be vastly improved with this one move, I think. So would you do it?
There's no way in hell I wouldn't do it! This is a no-brainer. Kidd is one of the Top 5 players in the NBA. Without him, the Nets are nothing, much like the Spurs are nothing without Duncan. Can you imagine Yao and Kidd passing the ball around and getting guys wide open shots? It would be so sweet.
By the way, my guess is Kidd's staying in Jersey. But if he's not, I don't think there's another team that could/would offer a better trade than Houston. So, in addition to whether or not you'd do this deal, anyone think of a better S&T for NJ?
Kidd's 30. He's got at least 5 years of superstar play left, considering he stays healthy. I doubt Francis will ever be as good as Kidd is now.
Why would Kidd agree to that trade? The only way to get him is in a sign and trade. But Kidd CAN walk away from NJ for NOTHING and join the Spurs. So the ball is in Kidd's court. Why would he prefer Houston to San Antonio and Tim Duncan who Kidd has said many times he would love to play with him. BTW, I think Kidd will stay in NJ.
Well, he's not near as old as Malone and, if I read you right, you'd be for that. I love Payton and wouldn't trade Steve for him on account of age, but I'd have to seriously look at Kidd.
uhhh why? so he can pass on the fastbreak on a team that doesnt know a lick about how to finish on a fast break?
I would be for Malone because he is a FA and would not require us giving up anyone. Also, because the team needs a veteran leader. Kidd would put us in the playoffs, but he is a running machine, and the Rockets need to build around Yao who is NOT a good fast break finisher. DD
I think he will, too. As for SA vs. Houston, I think it'd be close. I'm guessing Kidd would like playing with Yao too (and even though our offense has looked horrible this year, we've got a lot more guys to pass to than they do in SA), and it would give him a chance to give something back to NJ.
I wouldn't mind the deal, but: How exactly would a sign and trade work if Kidd has a year left on his contract? Why would Kidd want to come to a much tougher conference when he has an almost automatic upper seed in the East? Why would New Jersey want Francis when Kidd is such a better point guard? I don't see it happening...
Posey and Cuttino are both fast and good finishers. They can't really run the break all that well. Steve is worse on both counts.
To address your questions in order: I thought Kidd's contract was up this year. If it is, then S&T. If not, straight trade. The premise assumes Kidd knows he won't win a ring with NJ (or even in the East) and is looking to move. The premise also assumes Kidd tells NJ he's leaving and that NJ would rather get something than nothing. Steve's not as good right now, but has more years in him and will likely improve, so it's not a terribly lopsided deal.
This would also, I remind you, mean that his wife would be courtside for every game...with The Head That Almost Ate New Jersey in tow...for what it's worth.... Eye candy and monsters aside, I'm against it. Kidd seems like one of those players who will kinda lose his game quickly...
Deuce, a SnT lands Kidd roughly $15m more, because it can be for 7yrs vs 6yrs...those aren't pennies. SA is the #1 record team in the NBA. Especially if they win the title, why would they break up the core of their team, rather than use their windfall on key role players. a SnT might stroke his ego more, as SA will always be Duncan's team. Here it would mean history will remember it as Kidd/Yao forever, and he has a better chance as MVP with Yao than Duncan, for the same reason. with the threat of Kidd just leaving for "nothing," we could demand a future #1 pick to offset the age difference. the snag is that we have to move another player in a 3-way trade to offset Francis's Base Year Compensation issue. That player could be Rice, for one.
MacBeth, LOL, "The Head That Almost Ate New Jersey".... no kidding! That kid's head is huge. He is a bobble head doll! HP, I see what you are saying about the S&T option for Kidd. Your points are well taken, but I still don't see it happening. If Kidd is going to bolt from NJ I just think he will go with something that feels familar to him with Tim Duncan. But, I still think he will stay in NJ.
