    Road To Rocketsville Champion

    STEVE FRANCIS

April 1 - It all began in January with 64 past and present Rockets players vying for a common goal - bragging rights on the Road To Rocketsville. With a few surprises along the way - Matt Bullard knocking off Calvin Murhpy and then nearly Clyde Drexler in the Elite Eight round, and Eddie Griffin downing Rudy Tomjanovich to reach the Sweet 16, to name a couple - you the fans narrowed the road to a duel between Hakeem Olajuwon and Steve Francis for the Road To Rocketsville title.

The week-long voting went back and forth, like a couple of prize fighters refusing to take the knock-out punch. Olajuwon jumped out to the early lead before Francis regained control mid-week with a voting surge. On Friday, Francis led by just 11 overall votes with more than 2,000 ballots cast. The weekend voting saw Francis spread out his advantage slighty, and that was enough for the third-year guard from Maryland to hold off Olajuwon and lay claim to the title on the same day his beloved alma mater was to play for the NCAA championship. Congratulations Steve!

It doesn't say in the article that he won by just 16 votes, but on the front page it does. GO STEVIE!

Do you mean because they would be easier to compare having both walked out on the team?

First of all, please cut the Bullard BS.

    Nope..

    Eh...

    Don't say it..

    Fuggetaboudet.

Steve over Dream is a horrible injustice.

But keep in mind, the majority of voters are probably 12-year-olds in Vermont that know absolutely nothing about the Rockets or their history, look at nba.com, and go, "Wowie! Stevie Francis had 32 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists tonight! Lookie at that old dufus Hakeem Olahsajgf,nd or whatever in Toronto. He had 4 points, 5 rebounds! It's not eeeven a coooontest! What were they tinking?! Golly gee-bobbers! Lemme jist click on de Road to Rocketsville and cast my vote! Stevie rules! I never seen Olfnjbubvfbnc in an All-Star game like Stevie!"

To me the Rockets fans are the laughing stock of the NBA right now, What is shows is Rockets fans who voted for Francis have no knowledge of the game and it is sad because it makes the fans who have knowledge of the game look bad. But hey what do you expect from a bunch dumb young kids. By the way the people that were voting for Bullard were only voting for him cause he is white and they know he sucks so they turned into a joke. The Jokes on them cause they are the biggest joke of them all!!!!

I'm not sure what difference it really makes if kids no the whole game of basketball. I mean, how many of us here honest to God remember how good Bill Walton was at Portland or Wilt Chamberlin at Golden State or Bob Cousy or George Gervin or Nate Archibald or Bill Russell or Elvin Hayes or Oscar Robertson...??? I could go on for days.

People vote on things like this, particularly kids, because older players don't hold the immediate interest that younger players do. I mean, when Hakeem was in his prime (say 92-96), 18 year old kids today were between 8 and 12 years old.

I liked basketball when I was young, but does anyone here actually remember paying really close attention to the game of basketball at the age of 8?

Francis winning is nothing more than people finding him relavent in the demographic of Rockets.com. Most likely, these are kids from ages 14-22 who barely remember Hakeem in his glory days.

I do. I remember Iceman and some of the old school players like Moses and even bad feet overrated ass Bill Walton. I do agree that most of the people voting are kids who only see the Francis ,Kobe's or Carters of today. I just can't see how Francis beat the icon of Houston. Its true some or most are kids, but Francis over Dream? How in the hell did Francis beat out the 2 time Rocket mvp moses?

Seriously though, I do remember watching Hakeem destroy Sir Charles' Phoenix Suns two years in a row and demolishing everyone else (including DRob...).

It was all just a popularity contest and the current most popular player won.

Like me, you are showing your age. :)

As for Moses, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of people who voted in this contest weren't even born when Moses was playing for the Rockets. That was 20 years ago!

Again, just showing our age. :D

I understand what you mean, but you are taking this WAY too literally. This isn't a poll of sports writers. Everyone who knows the history of Houston sports knows that Hakeem Olajuwon is the single greatest athlete to ever play in Houston followed fairly closely by Nolan Ryan. But, kids are impressed by highlights and seeing things in person (as we were) which is why they chose who they chose.
