Well he can't guard point guards either so what does it matter. Steve allowing easy penetration from the opposing point is killing the rockets defense. Yao, Cato, and Eddie are so preoccupied with stopping the point guard from getting to the hoop that 1 of 4 things happens. (1) they're too late and he scores anyway (2) they get into foul trouble (3) the point finds the open man due to them having to move over to stop the penetration (4) the point misses the shot but someone else gets the offensive rebound because they are out of position

Seriously, how much worse could his defense be against the 2 guards of the league? At least he wouldn't have to deal with as many quick point guards that can blow right by him.

Who needs to defend other 2's in the league when you can play a zone defense, and you have 2 or 3 shot blockers on the back line?

There's not very many good scoring point guards in the league. SG is a much stronger position. I think it would be a lot worse.

I don’t like to post a lot, preferring to defer to the massive amount of basketball knowledge available on this board. However, I posted earlier in the season that this was a pivotal year in deciding the future of this franchise. I was all in favor of sitting back and waiting for the season to be over before making any lasting adjustments. I feel the guard nucleus has had four years and with four years, we should see enough to know if we can truly run a guard oriented offense and be successful. I still want to see management wait until the year is finished before making any decisions. However, I have always believed that Francis is one of the premier players in the league and I doubt anyone can argue that point.

That said, Steve Francis is not a point guard. And I’ve never believed that Cuttino Mobley’s role on the team should be one as a starter. I do not believe this team needs a flashy point, just one that is very good at defense and one that has a high basketball IQ. He needs to be able to distribute the ball and act as a forth or fifth option in the offense. We should have enough offense between Francis and Yao Ming to lead the way, enough offense from the remainder players to be competitive. I think right now, it is apparent that the guard oriented offense is not going to be consistent enough to win on a consistent basis. And the offense, as it is run right now, is not flexible enough to adjust when the guards are having off nights. Hypothetically, if this was the last game of the year coming up, I would be on the bandwagon to move Francis to shooting guard and find a point guard that can be consistent and know how to run the floor. Where does that leave Mobley and Moochie? I would think out in the cold. I’m also beginning to doubt Rudy T’s ability to run this team, which is sad because I want a happy ending for all concerned.
