I thought it would be a great idea to have a thread over something a little more original, so here is some interesting news. Basically, their Socialist president thinks it's unfair that some students have parents to help them out with their homework while others don't, so we should ban homework. Seriously I can't do anything but laugh. But still, what do you guys think about this lunacy?
I'll say this. My parents never helped me with homework and it used to drive me crazy on science projects when teachers would slurp all over some kid who submitted a project that was clearly aided heavily by a parent who spent money and gave time to make the project a success.
Home time should be used to learn the huge insane amount of critical things which you will not learn in a school. Also this levels the playing field for children with parents who don't have time or are a-holes. Good idea. They're increasing the school week from 4 days to 4.5 days to compensate anyway, so I don't see the big deal. They're just shifting the HOMEwork to CLASSwork, same amount of overall work it seems.
that's a joke right? What exactly do you think kids do when they get home, especially in todays work?
Wait, wait, wait. You say that this levels the playing field for children with bad parents.... but then say that home time should be used to learn other things? May I ask who's going to be doing that teaching if the parents are bad? Huh? I thought the French did 5, but they just took a Wednesday afternoon off and replaced it with a Saturday morning?
We don't have those projects in Germany and I assume in most parts of Europe. Therefore that point is irrelevant for people outside of USA. Looking at basic homework, don't see it as a problem if it's done in Class instead.
I had a class in high school that I used to do nothing but homework. I didn't learn a thing in that class. Doing homework in class takes away time from actual instruction time with the teacher. You do homework in order to work through problems and to learn the solutions. Also, my mom couldn't help me with most of my homework because she had basically a 10th grade education and was a single mom - however..she made darn sure I did my homework. I think limiting the amount of homework is good..but eliminating it entirely? I'm not on board with that.
