    'Family Guy' spinoff in works
By Kimberly Nordyke and Nellie Andreeva

    Feb 29, 2008

"Family Guy's" Cleveland Brown might be getting his own show.

Fox and 20th Century Fox TV are developing a spinoff from its hit animated series centered on Peter Griffin's bathtub-accident-prone neighbor, sources said.

The project, tentatively titled "Cleveland," is being written by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, Mike Henry -- who voices Cleveland and serves as writer-producer on the series -- and "The Simpsons" alum Rich Appel, executive producer/showrunner on MacFarlane's other animated comedy for Fox, "American Dad."

Cleveland, who plays off black stereotypes, is the most levelheaded among Griffin's trio of friends.

Once canceled by Fox, "Family Guy" triumphantly returned on the network in 2005. It is Fox's top-rated comedy and has grown into a $1 billion franchise with red-hot DVD and merchandise sales.

Fox brass had made it a priority to find another hit animated comedy to complement its Sunday comedy lineup. It has several cartoons in the works, including an animated version of its 2003 short-lived live-action comedy "The Pitts," from "Simpsons" veteran Mike Scully; "Relative Insanity," executive produced by Jack Black; and "Mothballs," from "Drawn Together" creators Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser.

In addition to "Cleveland," Fox and 20th TV also are developing a spinoff of the drama series "Prison Break," set at a female prison.

MacFarlane and Appel are repped by Endeavor.

    Cleveland?

    Cleveland?

    Uh yeah.

I don't see this working at all unless Quagmire makes a lot of appearances.

Exactly my thought. If anyone deserves his own show, it should be Quagmire.

Cleveland is the most boring character on the show.

Is it racist to ask if this is just for a certain demographic?

Unless they retool Cleveland into something new and original (see Daria & King of the Hill); it will suck.

Don't get me started on that female Prison Break.

I think King of the Hill was based on a character from Beavis and Butthead also, I think his name was different though, Mr. Anderson maybe.

I think Hank Hill was Mr. Anderson in Beavis and Butthead. I like Cleveland, but I can't see this being a success.

I don't care what ya'll say. I could watch Cleveland's hilarious antics all day long. My only concern is that Cleveland stays in the same place...if he like has to move to some new location I'll definitely be turned off.

It should be just like Family Guy except now the Griffins should play a small bit part.

It depends. Cleveland himself is not especially interesting...but if they surround him with a plethora of new, interesting characters on the order of the rest of those in Family Guy, it wouldn't matter so much that Cleveland himself would be dull. He could just sort of play the straight man to the rest of the shows insanity. But personally, I am of the opinion that a Quagmire spinoff would be more fun.

    What's the point?

I like the crossover moments between Family Guy and American Dad.

I think a Quagmire spinoff would be better if it was on HBO or Cinemax. I don't think a regular station would be able to get away with 30 minutes of non-stop Quagmire. Giggidy, giggidy.

    Same voice, different character.

Cleveland is my favorite character on Family Guy. I am pumped. Plus, I do a mean Cleveland impersonation. If I'm ever in a fight with my girlfriend or she's in a bad mood, all I have to say is "Ow, ow, ow, ow...when's it gonna be my turn?!?!" and I'm golden. :D
