http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/p...n=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1 HOUSTON -- Major League Soccer sources told FOX 26 Sports Monday that an investor group led by boxing great Oscar De La Hoya has reached an agreement in priniciple to buy 50 percent of the Houston Dynamo franchise from Anschutz Entertainment Group. De La Hoya will own 25 percent of the team and is partnering with Gabriel Brener, CEO of the Beverly Hills, Ca.- based Brener International group, who will also 25 percent. MLS sources told FOX 26 Anschutz Entertainment Group will continue to run the Dynamo franchise. AEG also owns the Los Angeles Galaxy and sources told FOX MLS Commissioner Don Garber had encouraged AEG to sell one of its franchises, with AEG preferring to maintain its entire interest in the L.A. franchise. The Dynamo relocated to Houston from San Jose, Calif. two years ago and have won back to back MLS Cup Championships. Team officials are currently in negotiations with the City of Houston to build a downtown stadium that is soccer-specific. The Dynamo play their home games in a football stadium on the University of Houston campus. De La Hoya won a gold medal in boxing in the 1992 Olympics and is a six-time professional world champion. MLS sources told FOX 26 De La Hoya is planning an appearance Friday in Houston.
Here's the chron story with mostly the same info. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/soc/5568891.html I'm not sure if the city was waiting to see how this all worked out, but hopefully this helps the stadium negotiations move along.
It's good news. AEG has been a great owner but it's time for the MLS to take that next step...single ownership. I think it's fantastic that we'll have someone like Oscar De La Hoya as an owner. It gives us a little more exposure and hopefully helps with the stadium deal. And he's not just some athlete with cash looking for something to do. He is a very successful businessman.
maybe he will help bring a big name latin star soon. although judging from attendence and performance, this team does not need one. the dynamo caught fire really quick. i think it helped that its currently based at uh. i remember when america from mexico played, i expected to see the stadium filled in yellow but i was surprised to see orange pride out there. its not just hispanics either there are a lot of different ethnicities at those games.
I hope that he lets management continue to do what is working well. I know that he is a businessman and will be tempted to bring over a big name. He's got to leave what has been the best run team in the MLS to do what they do best...Win as a team.
Oscar was on Glenn Davis' show last night and said he'd leave the running of the team to Dom and Oliver, which is good to hear. Full interview
Because every owner of every professional sports team is an expert in the respective sport? I can think of 3 others in the City of Houston alone that fit the same description.
im glad to hear this because we might be two time defending champions but outside of houston (and san jose) nobody really knows us needless to say outside of US they never heard dynamo before. De la hoya is a well known figure worldwide for his glory days in boxing and for golden boy promotions in a way it'll give us the spot light and it seems everything he touches turns into gold. ps i love how we play at Robertson b/c im a student there but we do need a new stadium. Robertson is just too small Go DYNAMO
Expert. EXPERT?!?!?! Here's AN ALbum cover: Oh, yeah, he's so successful at everything: Can't get any GHAYer than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d89IFcJD07A . Check out the "about" text.
I heard an interview with him and he said he was going to be a hands on type owner. He claims he knows the sport well and expects it to grow. However, i think he has a contract for 3 more fights, so i don't see him taking over the ship immediately, especially when we've already been doing so good. One good thing is i'd rather have Oscar courting potential free agents here than any other owner.
