    Wins Silver in Taekwondo

HOUSTON -- Big-time athletes will never use injury as an excuse. It's time to write the name of Sugar Land's Mark Lopez on that special list. One of a trio of siblings competing in taekwondo for the United States, at the Olympic games, Lopez won the silver medal in the 68-kilogram competition.

What no one knew until this story, Lopez suffered a broken left hand early in the match. After considerable prodding during a telephone interview with FOX 26 from Beijing, Lopez acknowledged the injury but didn't blame his loss on it.

"First round, right away, after the first exchange,"Lopez said. "The guy kicked with his right leg. I put my hand down to block it.

"I felt it right away. I didn't think it was broken but I felt that I got injured."

In fact Lopez said he needs to see an arthropedic surgeon quickly because he believes he is going to need surgery.

"You just have to overlook that pain, or whatever you are feeling," Lopez said. "I have been working too many years for this.

"I'm not going to let a small injury like that affect me."

And it nearly didn't. Lopez came within one kick, and one second, of winning the gold medal. South Korean Son Tae-jin scored in the final second to win the gold medal.

"Of course it takes a lot of focus," Lopez said. "You always have to train your mind to, mind over matter.

"My mom always told me forget about the pain, and do what you need to do, and go out there and do your job."

Lopez did just that coming up just short to finish second and the silver medal that goes with it.

"Very Proud," Lopez said. "Of course I came out here to win the gold medal, but a medal is a medal at the Olympic Games.

"It's a great honor to represent my country."

Mark's sister, Diana won a bronze medal in her competition in taekwondo. Older brother Steve has yet to compete for his third consecutive Olympic gold medal.

I think this thread should on the Hangout, because the thread doesnt talk about texans, astros, comets or dynamo.

And if you want to be very strict, then put it on the Olympics thread, but its ok if you want to put it in a thread alone, but definitely belongs to the Hangout, well thats just my opinion

Taekwondo being the only martial art in the olympics is gay!!!

    Edit:

I forgot about Judo. Taekwondo is still gay.

According to some posters on here, Mark shouldn't feel happy about his medal because it's not gold.

What a loser that Mark Lopez guy is.

Way to tough it out Mark!

Not to make light of this though you don't really use your hands that much in Taekwondo. If this had been Judo, wrestling or boxing he probably wouldn't have been able to compete.
