http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1748872 Tuesday, March 2, 2004 ESPN.com The 49ers officially notified quarterback Jeff Garcia on Monday night that he will be placed on waivers Tuesday, ESPN.com has learned. Garcia Garcia's release will come before Tuesday 4 p.m. ET deadline for all teams to be in compliance with the NFL's $80.6 million cap ceiling. The news comes as no surprise after Garcia rejected a cut in his base salary from $9 million to $5 million over the weekend. His cap number had gone beyond $12 million because of an escalator clause that transformed his base salary into the league's franchise number for quarterbacks. Garcia earned in excess of $20 million over the last two seasons -- more than any quarterback. The clause was put into his contract to give his agent and the 49ers a chance to determine where they stood in their relationship. Garcia, 34, has been to three Pro Bowls in his five seasons with the 49ers and has quarterbacked one of the league's most exciting offenses. 49ers general manager Terry Donahue said last Friday that Garcia's status would be resolved Monday. San Francisco-area media arrived at the team's complex Monday but, late in the day, team officials said there would be no announcement before Tuesday. It is believed that Donahue and agent Steve Baker spoke briefly Monday night about Garcia's status. The 49ers are in the midst of a tumultuous offseason because of the salary cap. They released left tackle Derrick Deese last week and plan to cut guard Ron Stone later Tuesday. San Francisco also plans to go without free agents Tai Streets and Terrell Owens in its receiving corps, although Owens is technically still with the team because his agent failed to file a timely void in the final three years of his contract by the deadline. Garcia offered to return if the 49ers made up the $4 million difference in incentives. Instead, they were willing to give back to him $1.5 million if he reached his incentives. He finally said no. His departure will save the 49ers roughly $2 million against the cap. Garcia's departure will elevate four-year veteran Tim Rattay to the starting spot. A former seventh-round draft choice, Rattay, 26, played well at times last season, winning two of three starts in place of an injured Garcia. He will have a difficult time, though, matching Garcia's numbers. Signed as a free agent in 1999 after a successful CFL career, Garcia started in 71 of his 74 appearances as a Niner. He completed 1,449 of 2,360 passes for 16,408 yards, with 113 touchdown passes, 56 interceptions and a passer rating of 88.3. The former San Jose State star threw for more than 3,000 yards three times and had a 4,000-yard season in 2000. He twice threw more than 30 touchdown passes and was named to the Pro Bowl squad on three occasions. Meanwhile on Monday, Garcia's arraignment on drunken-driving charges was delayed until March 15. He faces two misdemeanor charges from his arrest on Jan. 14. According to San Jose police reports, Garcia's blood-alcohol level was .237 -- nearly three times the legal limit in California -- when he was pulled over. ESPN.com senior writers John Clayton and Len Pasquarelli contributed to this report. Information from The Associated Press also was used
I think San Diego would be a good fit. Marty likes older QB's. As for TO the latest news is that the players union is trying to work out a deal in which TO will be released from his contract and the 49er's will get a pick at the end of the 1st round. Anyone else think this is BS?
The 49ers get the "33rd" pick in the draft. Utter nonsense. Though, there is precedent (Oakland Raiders and Chester McGlockton). Potentially screws over a lot of teams at the top of the 2nd round.
That's what I'm thinking (but I think Parcells will also talke to Testaverde to see if he will move to Dallas). Garcia would be preferable but Vinny would be cheaper and he is a Parcells guy. I would love for Garcia to be in Dallas, but I'm really not sure if Dallas can afford him, especially if they do have an interest in Corey Dillon? But I guess if they get Garcia and Keyshawn they may not have to go after Dillon and can just try get the best available back in the draft.
I also don't like the 33rd pick idea. The Niners could get a much much much higher pick for Owens through a trade. Also, I hope Ken Dorsey starts at QB. The guy is the future of the franchise, I believe it. I trust in Bill Walsh who drafted him. And I also want them to draft D'Angelo Hall in the first round.
Giovanni Carmazzi is still waiting for a crack at the starting job. Dorsey must be the future, Bill Walsh certainly wouldn't waste a 7th round pick.
I know Dallas pursued him (Dillon) at the deadline last year but the price was too high. Especially with Washington out of the way (they also wanted Dillon it was rumored) Dallas may be able to get him without giving up too much (but he does have a large contract which Cincy wants to get rid of). Dallas may be able to wait to see if Cincy decides to cut him rahter than give up anything for him anyways.
The 40whiners are going to suck again, hooray. Miami does look pretty stupid for giving up, what, a 2nd round pick for AJ Feeley. The guy wasn't even the 1st Iggle QB off the bench. Dallas would serve well to not pay too much for veterans, let the market fall out (and those players options), and then look to gobble them up.
I didnt get the AJ Feeley thing either. They are dumping Griese and Fiedler (noting special buy proven) to start this guy much less give up a 2nd for him. The 49ers are going to suck next year. They are being run into the ground after Mariucci left.
Haha...even the Genius can be wrong sometimes. But, he did not want to draft Drunkenmiller. He wanted Jake Plummer in the '97 draft but got overruled by Mooch. In terms of Jeff Garcia, he's an idiot. He's not gonna get more than $5 million/year from another team. The man is 34 and injury prone. Should've taken the 49ers offer and stayed near your home town instead of being "insulted." The problem with the 49ers is the owner. Unbelievable that two of my favorite teams (49ers and A's) are run by the biggest tight-wads in their respective sport.
.. just for perspective. But I think Dorsey was an incredibly overrated QB in college. I loved it when they tried to run that play to get him to score (i.e. - create a "heisman moment" for him) and it totally bombed.. Didn't it lead to a TD the other way?
the nfl sure does seem diffrent then it used to be. i hope emmitt has a strong last year. (if this is indeed his last year)
