Not to mention us forlorn Warriors fans. Now Larry Hughes is back out, too, with a strained shoulder (no idea yet how serious). But at least Erick Dampier looked good against Shaq last night. Always encouraging to see a guy coming off knee surgery race back to block a fast-break layup at one end, then later finish a fast break with a dunk at the other end. http://www1.nba.com/warriors/news/warriors_multimedia.html (click the 2nd-half link for "Dampier") [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited March 07, 2001).]
At some point these injuries stop being just a sad coincidence. Either Golden St. has managed to piece together a team full of injury-prone players, or there is something else - the trainer, the equipment, a local vodoo priestess - that is leading to this rash of injuries. ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
The popular local theory is to blame owner Chris Cohan, who bought the team right after Webber's rookie year (the last time GS made the playoffs), only to see everything fall apart within a couple of months. More rationally (at least in terms of recent history), you can fix some blame on the Warriors' team doctor, who performed surgeries on Chris Mills and Erick Dampier last year that essentially had to be redone this year. (Needless to say, the W's have been relying on outside specialists this season.) Ironically, Fortson's foot surgery was reportedly to fix an error made by the Boston team doctor last year (inserting a screw that was too small). Another part of the problem is the Warriors' poor outside shooting. Hughes, Chris Porter, and Vonteego Cummings all got hurt in traffic around the hoop -- where they have to try to make plays on a regular basis, because they can't nail simple, low-risk pick-and-roll jump shots like Stockton and Malone. Given the amount of inside pounding Antawn Jamison takes each game, it's a genuine miracle that he hasn't gone down yet. (He's just exhausted.) ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited March 07, 2001).]
Not to mention the fact that being in Cincinnati, watching all my Cincinnati boys succeed in the NBA(Nicky V, Danny, K-Mart, most notably), it's hard to watch Fortson go down, after what looked like a ever so promising season. I mean, thru six games, lead the league in bounds, with what, like 17 pg? At the time it was 3 more pg than Mutombo, if I remember right. And in 6 games, he recorded 6 double-doubles. He was going to have a great year, no doubt. ------------------ IMAGE COMING SOON!

Man to bad, Danny Fortson is a heck of a player who looked to be having a career year! Hopefully he'll get back to 100% and play some serious ball again for Golden State! ------------------ Rocks2001 in disguise. . .
Warriors: It's Time to Stick a Fork in Fortson by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com Wednesday, March 7, 2001 According to the Contra Costa Times, Danny Fortson, who has played in only six games, won't be back this year. The Warriors had been holding out hope that Fortson, who suffered a break in his right foot early in the season, could return for the last few weeks of the year, but that won't be the case. "You won't see him the rest of the year," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said after the Los Angeles Lakers' 97-85 victory over Golden State on Tuesday at the Arena. "From what I was told, he's not completely healed. In three weeks he's going to be re-evaluated. That takes us to about the 26th (of March). Now there's only three weeks left in the season." On Tuesday, Fortson was cleared to do some work in the swimming pool, but not to do any basketball-related activities. That will come in late March at the earliest. "Why would you jeopardize it?" Cowens said about bringing Fortson back this season. "With only three weeks left in the season. I'd still like him to play but on! ly! if he can. It's going to be rough from only a conditioning point of view. It would be like he'd be in training camp in April." <--> This has to suck for all of his fantasy owners who were hoping for a bump in the standing in the final six weeks of the season. ------------------ [This message has been edited by countingcrow (edited March 07, 2001).]
The W's injury curse rolls on ... the latest may-be-out-for-the-season candidates are Larry Hughes (may need arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder) and Marc Jackson (team doctors are telling him his groin won't heal without rest). ------------------
I can't decide whether that's really, really funny, or just sad. ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
And it just never stops ... from a local paper today: <quote>Another Warrior who was out of action Monday night: team mascot Thunder, who sprained his ankle while working out Friday. He is expected to return Wednesday against Utah</quote> ------------------
More in the so-sad-it's-almost-funny department from the Warriors' sister franchise in Jersey (quote from Basketball News): The Nets also have lost six players to season-ending injuries — Stephon Marbury, Kenyon Martin, Jamie Feick, Kendall Gill and Sherman Douglas — Kerry Kittles has not played a minute all season following knee surgery. They also lost their mascot, Sly the Silver Fox, for the season after he blew out his right knee during a routine. ------------------
