I have my doubts but I hope its true...

Formula One is coming to Austin, Mayor Lee Leffingwell says.

Leffingwell confirmed a report on Formula 1’s website that Austin will host an annual race from 2012 through 2021.

“This is a case of the right timing in the right place,” said Austin-based Tavo Hellmund, the managing parter of Full Throttle Productions, a special event and sports production company that was formed in 2005. “As many Americans know, Austin has earned a reputation as one of the ‘it’ cities in the United States.”

Leffingwell said he had a conversation with State Comptroller Susan Combs several months ago to start conversations about bringing the global racing event to Austin.

“We have been working with them ever since I first met with Susan to try to make this happen,” Leffingwell said.

The news had the racing world buzzing. Locally, it could also mean the building of a track to house the event, said Bernie Ecclestone, the president and CEO of the Formula One group.

“For the first time in the history of Formula 1 in the United States, a world-class facility will be purpose-built to host the event,” Ecclestone said. “It was 30 years ago that the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix was last held on a purpose-built permanent road course circuit in Watkins Glen, N.Y. (1961-80), which enjoyed great success.”

A F1 race was last held in the United States in Indianapolis in 2007, ending an eight-year run. There had been speculation that a race could return there or go to a track in New York.

It was not immediately known where an F1 track would be built in Austin.
