Memphis Grizzlies guard Michael Dickerson will retire due to chronic pain caused by groin and sports hernia injuries, the team announced Saturday. The Grizzlies will clear a roster spot by officially waiving Dickerson on Monday. "This is a sad day for me," Dickerson said. "I am grateful to the entire Grizzlies organization for their unwavering support and encouragement throughtout my career." Limited to just six games last season, Dickerson had not played this preseason. "Michael (Dickerson) has been a tremendous team member, and we will miss his contributions to our organization," Grizzlies president of basektball operations Jerr West said. "We really appreciate his hard work and dedication to the team during the last three years and his attempt to play with us." Acquired in a three-team trade in August 1999, Dickerson has career averages of 15.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest in 212 games.
it´s really sad, cause dickerson was a real good shooter and a great player.... wow all three players the rockets took in the first round of the 98 draft aren´t playing in the nba today.... or does bryce drew have some game left....
What a shame for him. I thought he was looking to have a pretty solid career. 18+ ppg in his first year w/ Grizz. Could have only gotten better from there. Good luck to him and lets hope that groin pain goes away.
This comes as a real surprise! As a former U of Arizona alum - I hung out with his guy back in the day. All I can say is class act! - everything that the NBA should be. It is a real shame to see him go. All the best!
It's a real shame. It always saddens me when talented young players lose their career to an injury. It's especially sad after he's fought so hard for so long to come back. I wish him luck with whatever he chooses to pursue now.
it's a shame. i always thought dickerson was a MUCH better player than mobley but it was mobley's attitude and dickerson's lack of talking that got dickerson traded...and the fact that his college buddy Bibby was on the grizzlies at that time. he was a good player..and i agree with peleincubus, the dude was too fast for his own good. i think he's the fastest player i've ever seen in my life playing for the rockets.
