Maybe this has come up recently but I can't find any info on Matt Maloney on NBA.COM. Are his NBA days finally over? Old School
But we still pay him for the next two or three years, don't we? Or was that just a buy out that went againest the cap for several years afterwards? You would think someone would pick him up when he gets minimum and we pay the rest.
actually, who ever had him last yr picked up his contract. After the Rockets got rid of him, any team that picks him up is picking up his contract. If he wouldn't have been picked up by anyone, then the rockets would be responsible. Does anyone remember how his agent punked the rockets by saying some team in greece wanted him and then the rockets gave him the contract.
That's not true. The Rockets were still paying him when he was with the Bulls. I'm not sure about his days with the Hawks. Old School
I'm not sure what program you were reading but he's not even listed on the Hawks roster on their web page. He was also not on the bench last night. You can find every NBA player on a list through NBA.COM and his name does not come up. I would like to see the program you have that says otherwise. Old School
I think Clutch can now officially change the description of this forum to say, "Hell, the slower people in the group can even talk about ex-Rocket Matt Maloney." Are you questioning my sources?? Well, maybe I just won't send the program to you then. Maybe I should only email a scan of that Program to people who don't ever question my sources. Anyone who wants the Program let me know, and I'll put you on my Rocket's Program distribution list. ps: I met a HS friend of Alan Henderson last night, and she said Scott May's son blew off Indiana, because they fired Bobby Knight. She also had some juicy gossip about Alan...if you want more, you have to subscribe to my distribution list. pss: Maloney is an unsigned free agent. Not cut, not renounced, not waived, not released, not signed. Yet, who really cares?
Crispees dorky sources are those programs (a piece of paper) passed out at the Compaq center before every game. Sorry Crisppe to ruin your fun As far as I know a team is not going to pick up Maloneys contract. We cut him, which means we still pay him. It was not a buyout. So whoever signs him just pays him the minimum and we are still paying him. So he is earning (if that is the right word) two contracts at a time.
I don't remember anything about Greece but I do remember some rumor from a Spanish mag saying he was going to Barcelona to play but this was after Matt had already signed his long term contract. see Clutch's post
Then I guess that makes your program incorrect, eh? In other words he is not in the NBA which was what prompted my initial post. Thanks for finally answering the question. Old School
Rockets are responsible for his contract because Maloney CLEARED WAIVERS before he was signed by Chi or whoever the hell picked him up after he got cut from Houston. If a team felt desperate enough to claim Maloney ASAP, after he got cut, before he cleared waivers, then that team would be responsible for his entire contract. Let's say the Rockets cut Francis tommorow. He would obviously be snapped up before clearing waivers, so his contract would be the responsibility of the team that claimed him. If we cut Walt right now, and he did clear waivers, we would still be responsible for his 5 mill, whether or not he signs with another team. As long as the contract is guaranteed (90% of NBA contracts are) then it's hard to just cut a player, without dealing with the financial burden of a "dead" contract.
kidrock (or anyone), What does cleared waivers mean? Some friends and I got into a serious discussion(bet) the other day on that same issue. It remains unresolved.
drpepper-I don't know the specifics per se, but a team cuts a player. That player is available on the market... With that being said, there is a pecking order of who can claim him first, from worst record to best. So a team like the Bulls would have first crack at claiming the player's rights. If the Bulls picked up a guy on waivers, the Bulls would be responsible for his contract. The term "CLEARING WAIVERS" means all 29 teams passed on signing him. I'm not certaing how long waivers really lasts. It might not even be a set time, it could just be how long it takes for the teams to decline taking the player in. After a player clears waivers, then he's a FA with no restrictions. In baseball, the Astros picked up Vinny Castilla after he cleared waivers. Tampa Bay cut him, and 29 teams passed on him, because of his 7 million dollar contract. However, after he cleared waivers, teams were free to negotiate with Vinny. The Astros were able to offer Castilla the minimum, because he was still being payed his 7 mill by Tampa Bay. I hope that helps.
