I saw a report during the war (can't remember which news station) that said some of the captured Iraqi "elite" republican guard troops were actually wearing soup bowls on their heads for helmets! Seriously. They even showed them. "Elite" republican guard.....
"Elite" republican guard..... As shown in Gulf War I when we spared the "elite Republican Guard, when we had them all trapped out in the open on that road in a shined deer shoot, they weren't that elite. They were billed as "elite" to scare Americans into thinking that they were a threat. Also I suppose you could say they were "elite" compared to the relatively unarmed Shiites and Kurds. When Bush I encouraged these groups to rise up, the Guard slaughtered them in a relatively efficient manner. It looks like the remnants of the Iraqi Army, who are so inclined, are being given a belated chance for creative guerrilla war.
Bill Hicks on the first Gulf War: "They went from the 'elite' Republican guard, to the Republican guard to the Republicans made this **** up about there being guards out there."
