He's about to sign an extension: Wednesday, October 1, 2003 ESPN.com news services When Kevin Garnett reports to training camp Thursday, he'll have outdone himself on the megadeal front. Garnett The Timberwolves are expected to announce as early as Wednesday that Garnett has signed a five-year contract extension that is thought to be worth more annually that his current deal, which averaged out to $21 million per year over six years. Garnett will be paid $28 million this season, the final year of the deal. His $126 million contract was the biggest in NBA history at the time and the ignition point for change in the NBA's economic landscape. The star forward is limited to a five-year extension -- unless he waited to play out his existing contract. If Garnett waited until summer, he could sign for seven years with the Wolves or six years with another club. Garnett's extension was reached in a one-on-one meeting Tuesday with owner Glen Taylor, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing a source close to the organization. An extension had been discussed for two years. It will be another challenging season for the Timberwolves, who were eliminated from the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers last spring -- their seventh straight first-round exit from the postseason. Minnesota's opener is Oct. 29 against Milwaukee. The Wolves made several moves this summer in an attempt to avoid an eighth consecutive loss in the opening round, acquiring shooting guard Latrell Sprewell from New York, point guard Sam Cassell from Milwaukee, and signing center Michael Olowokandi as a free agent from the Los Angeles Clippers. Garnett, Wally Szczerbiak and Troy Hudson are the only players who are certain to come back this year as the new-look Wolves try to move up in the ultra-competitive Western Conference. "I think everybody's excited about the year," Garnett told The Associated Press last week. "Everybody's looking forward to seeing how we're going to look."
Worth more annually than his current deal? This is sad news. At least we could've dreamed for another year
This is great news. We've just eliminated the most worthless thread topic in this BBS - KG dreamcasting. Now can we get back to discussing basketball...please?
Did anyone honestly think that we ever had a shot at KG?? He was not going to take a huge paycut just to play with Yao and/or Steve. Furthermore, Minny is not going to take a Cato/Taylor contract just to get something in a sign and trade.
Damn, and here I was thinking that Minnesota signed Sprewell and Cassell to set up the acquisitions of Kelvin Cato and Maurice Taylor. Turns out they're actually trying to win instead. Who would've thought that?
Guess Garnett is more interested in $$$ than jewelry! Cuz that is ALL he is gonna see in his lifetime with the Wolves!
Hmmm...sounds like a great player that will be surrounded by scrubs..... You can't throw all that money at one person and leave the other 11 fighting for the few dollars that are left. Did they learn nothing from being hamstrung by his last contract???
Actually codell we can, I posted in another thread. Just daydreaming though Putting on my "please please please" cap, Houston actually CAN theoretically land KG. It's not happening though. Think about this: with the Lakers this and next year, I doubt Minnie can actually win it all. After two years Spree will be hobbling on his last knee. Yao >>> Kandiman JJ < old Spree Cat >= Wally world Moochie << Sam (I left SF out for a reason here) Rox Bench >> Wolves Bench So outside KG the teams are pretty equal, with Houston having far more upside. Only 2 teams outside Minnie can sign KG. Utah and Houston. Utah for obvious reasons, Houston because of the 6.5 - 7 million trade exception. So KG can let his contract expire take a pay cut to say oh 21 million and sign 1 year with Utah and we'll trade SF + trade exception (or better yet SF + Cato) for KG. After which, KG can sign a contract extension + 10% pay raise with Houston, bringing him close to the 24 million he makes right now. Why would Utah help Houston you say? Well, who wouldn't pull the trigger on this trade? They have no chance for the next couple years and they can't attract a good FA. There's no way in hell KG would stay with them (if he can't win with Rasho, Wally and good scrubs he has chemistry with, why would he try with AK and Harp). They get a young all-star staring PG (+ an above average big men which they desperately need if Cato is involved). After the end of the season, with SF, they CAN ACTUALLY ATTRACT GOOD FA's. SF + AK + Harp + early lottery pick + 2 conditional first rounders + big contract for being under the cap will attract a lot of interest. Remember what SF + early lottery pick got us (lucky hand Steve)? With Minnie losing KG they'd be right back in playoff contention. Not that all this will happen. Good go daydream though...
Whoever thought KG coming to houston was a real possiblity simply because of a newswriter sprinkling "Houston" in his column was deluding themselves. That article has to be wrong though, the contract is more than his previous one? What?
MFW, Two problems with your proposal: 1) If KG signs with Utah as a FA, then it will take him 3 years to have "Bird Rights". The CBA was almost specifically altered to prevent what you are suggesting (signing someone to a lower contract for 1 year, then invoking Bird Rights to go over the cap). 2) If KG were to sign with Utah, he would have to wait till Dec 15th to be traded. So really, your idea is more than just a daydream. It wouldn't work according to the CBA.
Darn no edit: 3) Our trade exception expires in 12 months. So it would be useless come Dec. 15th when KG would be eligible to be traded.
Alright then, SnT with Minnie for SF and Cato + exception. Like I said just daydreaming. I'm one of those that never thought we had a chance in hell of landing him. Really I just look at it as a joke.
Minny has Cassell and Kandi locked up at PG and C for the next 3 years. Why would they want Steve and Cato?
Id rather have Brand. Honestly. Better rebounder, MUCH cheaper, and a quiet guy is always nice. We know Minny will atleast make the playoffs. BUt the clippers will be /and in the future be horrendous. Our trade excemtion nullifies the byc. If brand doesnt like being in last place again,he can ,theoretically demand a trade ala Odom to the media trash talking the Clippers, and then a Mobley/Grif/trade emp/picks should get it done. WHY SHOULD WE RUIN OUR CAP ALSO FOR KG ? I'll tell you what happened. Probably KG agent talk to the Rockets, and we said NO the lux tax even for KG 22 million a year(which I would say no ALSO) KG isnt that good. Amare tourched him for 38 points in Minny, remember???????
Uh... there was never a chance KG was coming to Houston. He wasn't about to walk away from all that loot T-puppies were going to offer him. Anyway we have Amaechi now. Don't need no young 6'10 SF/PF that jump out of the gym type guy. out!
