I was talking to a couple of people today at the Rockets practice and was told that Lakers' owner Jerry Buss told Bill & Calvin last year that he considered him the best play by play team in the league even over the venerable Chick Hern. Also, Michael Jordan admitted to them that when he watches League Pass, he invariably tunes in to the Rockets because he considers Bill & Calvin the most entertaining announcers in the NBA. Interesting stuff. ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com
I think all u Bill & Calvin Haters just got
CLOWNED
I mean, they must be pretty damn good to deserve those comments from Buss and Jordan. ------------------ president of the dan langhi fan club.
I completely agree. It takes at least two people who are individually talented, who also have differing points of view, and who work well together. You can't just throw a couple of ex-pros and a comedian together and get an informative and entertaining show. Look at Monday Night Football. Bill and Calvin are way ahead of those guys who broadcast the most popular sports show in the country. ------------------
After moving to the DFW area and having to listen to other teams' broadcasts of Rockets games, I have even more respect for those 2. I kinda like Bill & Pimp Daddy Calvin with his Technicolor wardrobe. I've listened to some of the most boring play-by-play and analysis on the planet from some of their competitors. ------------------ My stupid little site could never compete. It got to where it was just me sayin' the same stupid crap! Jeff, since 98% of the posters here hate both the Lakers and Michael Jordan, I don't think this argument will carry much weight! ------------------ When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of yourself and umption. visit www.swirve.com
I love Calvin. I want some humor when the Rockets are getting their ass whooped. ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Stupid threads & Stupid BBS names are not FUN! 2. Conduct yourself in a FUN way! The Fun Police are Watching. Vote for the Rockets & Have FUN!
There were times when i didn't like the two, but a few years ago, after I got a chance to listen to other cities' broadcasters, I've come to realize that Bill and Calvin (at least relatively speaking) are two of the best: intelligent, objective, entertaining. For those without Direct TV, y'all should tune into WGN for the Bulls games. My word! Especially in the Jordan days, EVERY wrong thing was the refs' fault. They are homers to point of major irratation.
I don't think our two guys are objective... However, I think they are great... They feed off each other well and have great chemistry... Many times you'll have a pair of Bozos who just sound dead and disagree with each other... We shouldn't take them for granted... In addition, we have the best radio guys BY FAR in Gene Peterson and Jim Foley... Those two make listening to the game on radio almost as good as watching it... ------------------
The only way we could improve on Bill & Calvin would be if we added Gene Peterson's enthusiasm to the mix. Now that would fire up any Rocket's fan. ------------------
How many agree that Calvin and Bill should make a pilot and send it to the major networks. I guarantee at least UPN or Fox would pick it up. ------------------ please venture to atheistalliance and rocketsonline I AM SPARTACUS Bush and Gore make me want to Ralph votenader.com
those two are great.. calvin is a really nice guy from the times i've met him.. also had a chance to meet gene peterson a few weeks ago. he's another really nice guy.. he didn't just sign a quick autograph instead he talked to me a little while etc. peterson and calvin are great and bill worrell is cool too. we have a great broadcasting team. only way to make it better would be to have charles barkleycome back for a few games every once in a while to help with play by play. would be funny to have him and calvin together again... on topic of announcing does anyone know what happend to bruce geitzen (spelling) he hosted the half time and post game shows during the winning years and went to atlanta i think.. anyone know what he's doing now? ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be" [This message has been edited by Rocket Fan (edited October 29, 2000).]
And Michael Jordan's and Jerry Buss's qualifications for knowing good play by play men are????? Since Michael said it does that mean he is right about Nikes, Wheaties, MCI, and eveything else he endorses? When I watch a game, I like it when I do not notice the announcers. That is impossible to do with Murphy and Worrell. At least the T'Wolves got rid of Trent Tucker. He was way too painful to listen to. ------------------
I am fond of Bill and Calvin but I do think they clown a little too much. I would like a little more enlightenment on plays called or why so and so did what. Calvin, clown that he is, is very intelligent. He is great with kids too. My nephew went to one of his basketball camps a few years back and I observed every day for the week and I was really impressed with Calvin Murphy. The kids were in awe of him and they listened to his wise words of life as well watched him. ------------------
i love bill and calvin they talk like real people not like those stupid play by play robot announcers u hear like steve albert and many other announcers.Their not the smartest announcers in the game by they may just be the best. I always tune in to watch them just to see what crazy ass pimp suit calvin is gonna wear next!Calvin is the man! I saw him up in person before a game this preseason wearing this gold suit with a tail that came down to his ankles. I nearly fell out of my seat laughin my ass off. They are the best. ------------------ www.truebballfansite.homestead.com
Bobrek, The difference b/w Calvin and Bill, and Nike Wheaties and MCI, is that Calvin and Bill did not pay Jordan to say these things. I am not saying that Jordan's opinion here makes a big difference in whether or not I actually like our announcers (I do), but I don't think this analogy is a good one. ------------------ "Nothing is certain but the unforseen." "My nephew went to one of his basketball camps a few years back" Stevie, I went to one of his camps when I was about 12, and I know what you are talking about. Him and Mike Newlan were both there, and one of the more impressive things he did was near the end of the day. He started from underneath the basket, hit a shot, took two steps back, with Newlan feeding him the rebounds, and shot again. He kept going until he was standing on the midcourt line. The dude didn't miss until he hit 5 straight shots at the midcourt line. Amazing. ------------------ "Nothing is certain but the unforseen." Some Dude
I always wondered if they were friends away from work and last night I saw them together at the Tina Turner concert. There were several Rocket assoc. people there. Bill & Calvin, CD, Clyde Drexler and Lisa Maloski(sp). I got to talk to CD for a little while. He is a great guy. Very friendly and likes to talk about the Rockets. He even stopped when he was leaving and shook my hand and told me it was nice to meet me. ------------------
