For The Soldiers

Thank you for your service and the brave duty you are doing for the country.

I noticed in your original post you mentioned the troops serving in Iraq but I would also like to thank those serving in Afghanistan for their service also and to US troops serving everywhere.

 

Let me add my thanks to you for your service. I also send out thanks to everyone who has served and is serving in Iraq.

My own nephew was in Iraq with the Marines, and there is so much that our soldiers do with out that people aren't even aware of. A lot of folks might know the risk and even being away from families, but among the things he missed most were showers, and American food, and the little things that soldiers have to do without in Iraq.

They really are making all kinds of sacrifices.

This is the first major war that my family doesn't have someone serving... dating back to the Revolution. I had a grandfather and great uncles in WWII, great uncles and cousins in Korea, an uncle and cousins in Vietnam, just cousins in the First Gulf War, and now, nobody. I suspect this is representative of a lot of families out there and that's why this thread is important. It seems it is easier for us to divorce ourselves from the reality of war and the ramifications for families and our country... but we should work to not let that happen.

I spent 21 years in the military, and although I am against this war, I appreciate and feel for the folks who have to go to Iraq.

I've often been asked if I was still on active duty would I go. That's a difficult question to answer but I think I would refuse.

It's such a shame that these fine folks are doing such and outstanding job at something that will go down in history and our biggest political blunder ever.

That's an interesting point. I have a friend who is against the war but is in the MN National Guard and he still went, in fact he's now on his second tour. While its true his choices were go to Iraq or go to prison but I don't think he ever seriously considered not going even though he was against it from the begining.

While not in the military myself I think if I was I would still go. I understand rank and file soldier has no freedom of choice about whether to go or not but I also believe in the spirit as well as the letter of the law regarding an obligation to obey lawful orders. That is why I always feel that outside of conduct on the battlefield decisions like to invade Iraq the ones who are accountable are the civillian leadership.
