    Realize I take cabs all of the time. You are typically greeted with a recorded response until you get a live person on the phone.

    Tonight, it is like I'm calling into a radio contest line when I was 15.

    I'm not big into conspiracies, but this just seems too "convenient" for our local law enforcement.

    Regardless, Yellow cab, Liberty Cab and others are going to have some serious explaining to do.

    The police don't need to go through the trouble of jamming cab service phone lines to fill their sea with drunk fish..... They can just pull folks over arbitrarily.

    by 11pm here in Chicago, cab drivers were refusing to pick you up unless you were going at least 20 miles. Every cabbie we talked to at 3am would not pick us up from the bar b/c we lived 2 miles from the bar we were at... so we ended up walking home.

    If my job were carting people around I doubt I'd be as difficult to reach as most were last night.

    Kinda like Amazon's website crashing for 2 hours on Black Thursday.

    How do you not get this? Are you simple?

    The big companies are jammed up, and the small companies are just independent contractors who don't feel like driving around on New Year's Eve. They might actually even be coming in from way outside the city, or just might not consider cabbing their primary/full-time gig. I don't know if Metro ran past 11:00 am last night, but if they did maybe you could hold your nose and try that. Just sit in the front, like the olden days.

    That's a horrible analogy. If Amazon's website crashed for 2 hours on Black Friday, they'd be losing business because of all the people that would like to buy things from them that can't. As long as there are still people in the cabs all the time, cab companies aren't losing any business from not answering additional phone calls. They would just have to turn people away anyways.

    It was impossible to get a cab in Austin last night unless you just got lucky and flagged one down.
