For those of you who are looking into Battier's stats last season, and refuse to believe they were the product of an overcrowded Grizzlies' team, I'll repost this post I made in another thread into here: From a mathematical standpoint, if you divide the amount of points per game he had last year by the shots he took per game, (kind of like on base percentage in baseball) you get roughly 1.43. Now, take that number and multiply it by ten shots per game (14.28 ppg). Ten shots is easily realistic. Now, multiply it by 12 shots (17.16). Now, by 15(21.45). Given, the more shots Battier takes per game, the lower his field goal percentage will go, but it won't affect these numbers by much. Battier had a GREAT season last year, and is very underrated. His whole career has been overshadowed by a team that just simply cannot find enough balls to shoot. Battier played nearly 35 minutes a game, and only shot just abover 7 shots a game. That alone tells a great story of the way his season could have been. The guy is a very efficient shooter who is productive on both ends of the court. Right now, any forward playing on the Grizzlies is probably not going to average what they should be averaging. There are just too many players on that team. With that being said, what does all of this say about Battier's character? I've never once heard the guy speak up about the clog in Memphis. I've never once heard him complain. In fact, when Battier was coming out of college, there were so many stories on his character, that the country nearly forgot the guy knew how to play basketball. And for those of you who don't believe Battier will average AT LEAST 12 points a game on this team next season, we'll see.
Battier's a good rotation player. A solid starter for a playoff team. That said, he gets paid like a solid starter on a playoff team. I don't think giving up a young, cheap, high-upside player like Gay to acquire him makes this a moneyball deal.
Some more interesting tidbits for those that believe Battier didn't suffer by being on the Grizzlies: Pau Gasol played one less game that Battier, yet took 573 more shots than him! Mike Miller, who played 7 less games took 149 more shots than Battier. Bobby Jackson, 10 less games, 127 more shots.
This is interesting.. there is also proof simply in his career records that he can score more if he shoots more. Look at the line during his rookie season. 961 shots, 14.4 per game. In his rookie season he was averaging 42.9% shooting, and last season he was averaging 48.8% shooting. But if we take the 961 shots of his rookie season, divide by the 78 of that season to get 12.3 spg .. how interesting, then 12.3 * 1.43 = 17.6 ppg. 17.6 ppg and 5 rpg wouldn't be bad stats for a 3rd option. How is Battier's defense? How is his ball handling? Can he play point forward and do the kinds of things Bobby Joe Reid used to do? David.
Battier will get left open A LOT and if he can simply hit wide open 18 footers consitently while taking the other team's toughest defensive assignment to let TMac coast a little, he might be a sleeper (but only if Gay turns into another heartless athlete with "potential").
Juwan Howard is definitely not as effeective on the defensive side of things. Battier averaged over a steal and a block a game last year.
what do you wanna say? Battier is so good that the coach doesn't want to give him more right to shot? Or because he is 4th/5th option in team offense? Don't forget his 14.3% and 28.6% 3pt, and 33.3% and 40.0% FT in two consecutive swept playoff.
What? I'm saying that he was a 5th option on a team that he should have been a 2nd option on, thus, his production was nowhere near what it should have been. Because he was a 5th option, and is now coming to be (presumably) our 3rd option, his stats will increase.
He's saying that the coach isn't the one taking the shots ...his ballhog teammates are. Gasul obviously deserves to get a lot of shots. Mike Miller and Bobby Jackson are high volume shooters too. Battier just isn't gonna get many shots there. In Houston, Battier will be left wide open many times during the game we our players aren't selfish like Mike Miller. I wouldn't be surprised to see his PPG go up if this trade sticks.
I believe the opposite is true. Has anyone's offensive production gone up when joining the Rockets? When a team has two superstars (see Rox, Heat) the other 3 players numbers go down. If Battier is 10/5 in 35 minutes with the Grizz, I don't see that going up. It's slightly possible but I think it's more likely he'd be scoring less as a Rocket. Some of you guys also act as if he'll be launching treys all of a sudden. While he shoots a good percentage he only averaged one make a game last year. He's never been a scorer and that shouldn't change much next year.
lol. do you think all of the players' statistics are increasing linearly? Well, it seems Hayes should be a starter.
just like swift didn't get a chance in memphis after 4 seasons. battier was virtually in the exact situation, he's going to shine on the rockets. t-mac's going to make him an all-star.
I don't think he's our 3rd scorer. But I don't see his production dropping. touche. But Swift's gig was his unrealized "potential." Nobody is saying Battier has untapped potential ...he's a solid NBA player. When utilized more efficiently, he'll produce more.
I am starting to warm up to this trade. Besides the fact that Battier's scoring will likely increase now, he is also a good perimeter defender. The Rockets need perimeter defense, don't they? He may not be flashy, but he is a consistent player and that is something else the Rockets need. Add all of this on to the fact that he is a great team player, I'd say the Rockets will be a much better team than they were in 2005 with his help. Now the Rockets need to sign Mike James and find another inside presence with rebounding ability then they will be set. By the way, when did Rudy Gay become an impact player? Where did the Dwayne Wade comparisons come from ? Before yesterday most people said this draft lacked the star power of other years. Had the Rockets traded Brandon Roy (the played I wanted) I would be upset, but I can sort of see why they made this deal. If the trade goes through, I don't see what the point is in being angry... There's nothing we can do but hope management made the right decision.
How's Shane's ball handling? How's his first step? Is he only known for 3-points and defence? Nevertheless, Swift AND Gay for one player is just not smart trade whether u like it or not
Has anyone's scoring gone up when put on the floor with Tmac and Yao? The same way all of this year's Miami Heat additions scored less playing with Shaq and Wade, I think it's a stretch to say Battier's scoring will likely increase. Also, take note that he only scored 20 points on one occassion in 2006. Gay was the best player on one of the most talented teams in the history of college basketball. He's an athletic freak that has a beautiful jump shot. He also comes from a school that hasn't had a lottery flop ever. Maybe he won't be a superstar, but it's hard to imagine he can't be at least 10/5 even in his rookie campaign. I'm not going to pretend to be happy when I'm not. And while I love my Rockets, I still hold the right to be pissed if I think they royally screwed up. Just because you love a team doesn't mean you shouldn't be pissed if they screwed up. Take the Knicks for example, any reasonable person would be pissed off at them for screwing up so many times. I support and love the Rockets, but I'm not going hold back if I think they made a major mistake.
Mike James Bob Sura Jon Barry “Very good athlete, can shoot with super range. DerMarr Johnson has abilities almost never found in a 6-9 player. His offensive potential is limitless. DerMarr has one of the silkiest touches from outside, combine that with great handles and super athleticism and you have a special talent. NBA Comparison: Scottie Pippen” Will Gay be better than Dermarr Johnson? Maybe, but the point of saying this is that no one knows for sure what type of player Gay will be. Many players before him were expected to do grand things too. Like Johnson, however, and unlike players like Lebron James, Carmello Anthony, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, etc., Gay’s potential as a future all star is no certainty. No one is saying you can’t be angry… I just don’t know what the point in getting mad would be. It wont change anything.
