For those of you that have seen my work I'm sure you've gathered that I am 'tweener. I am too mainstream to do a lot of black shows and too black to do some mainstream shows. There are a few guys in the country that are like me, we have as many credits as most comics but seem to slip through the cracks when it comes to widespread popularity...so this is what we've come up with. Four black acts, all smart and all male will do this vagina monologue/mar1juana-logue takeoff on what we experience in this unique position, the working title is "Sell-Out". We will cover subjects ranging from politics to white women within the first 30 minutes, and then engage in the parts of our stand up routine that deals with this subject matter. Honestly do you think this is something that would work? We thought about installing mechanisms like OJ Simpson doing a voice-over of our intros, pics of Clarence Thomas, Michael Jackson etc. as part of the set and answering questions (ala Blue Collar tour) at the end of the show. This is not a black show that appeals to the mainstream but a mainstream show that appeals to blacks. "Uncle Tom's Cabin has a new logue" SELL-OUT Too Black? Not Black Enough? You decide... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good concept or waste of time?
I would personally be interested in it, but to be totally honest, it could have drawbacks. Downside: Part of me thinks that you would scare off the white crowd and probably also alienate the black crowd (esp. using a term like Uncle Tom in the title) before they even give you a chance. Upsdide: By joining together in one show, you're basically using each other's individual appeal to reach out to a larger audience than you could reach on your own. If the content is good, the positive word of mouth should spread fast and could steamroll to result in good success for all of you. In general, I think you are better off embracing your true style rather than changing to reach a wider audience. You have been successful because you're good. Run with it...I think this partnership will be helpful, and I'd bet on you. Good luck. And when you put it all together, let us know your schedule. I'm interested to see your show.
Frank Sinatra: "You are black, and I am white Life's an Eskimo Pie, let's.. take a bite! That was groovy thinkin' Lincoln, when you set them freeeeeee... We all know Cats are the same Maine to Mexico. Good. Bad. Guys and chicks!" Stevie Wonder: "I am dark, and you are light." Frank Sinatra: "You are blind as a bat, and I have sight! Side by side, you are my amigo, Negro, let's not fiiiiiiiight!" Stevie Wonder: "Ebony, ivory Living in perfect harmony." Frank Sinatra: "Salt and pepper, Sammy and Dean Stevie and me are peachy keen!" Stevie Wonder: "You are white." Frank Sinatra: "You are black - and who cares!" Who cares, baby!
Good thing that's a reference, cuz otherwise I would have seriously said "Jesus Jeff, why don't they just call it the Oreologues..." Is that from when Eddie Murphy and Piscapo did their version of Ebony and Ivory? Edit: Damn, I'm late.
It's actually going to be a little smarter than straight black/white, and when all is said and done we aspire more for respect and critical acclaim. If it's good, commercially it will catch on quickly. But then again I am a dillusional artist...
Will Tim Meadows be there Run with man . . .see if it has legs The only thing I wonder is . .. . you all maybe duplicating effort/talent Hopefully u are all falling through different cracks so you can cover each other's ''weaknesses' rather than duplicating the same things that are working against u Rocket River it is like having two Clocks
I don't know about an act...but write it as a book. Pick up a "Writer's Market" and start submitting it.
Ever thought about having a gig in Europe? You know what, the whole "black and white" thing wouldn't work here, because the vast majority of (educated) people don't really give a "%"%" about black and white, and the stereotypes which could be made fun of do not really exist here like that...so wouldn't that be a challenge to STILL make these people laugh? Also...regarding mainstream....where do you see Chris Rock...more black or more white or what? I find him hilarious, but I wonder where you see yourself compared to him...
