The University of Alaska just victimized Nebraska to make NCAA history. Now excuse me as I continue celebrating my university's big win...... UAF Makes History: Upsets Nebraska, moves on to Championship Game The University of Alaska Fairbanks made history, becoming the first Division II team to ever make the finals of a Division I tournament. By defeating Division I Nebraska, 64-61, in game seven of the BP Top of the World Classic, Saturday, November 23, the Nanooks qualified for the championship for the first time ever in the seven-year history of TOWC. Before this win, the Nooks' top showing at a Division I tournament was a third-place finish, now they have the chance to place at least second. UAF has already tied last season's record of four wins. The Huskers' size helped them grab 33 rebounds, but it was UAF's quickness that contributed to the win and rattled the Nebraska offense, forcing 16 turnovers and grabbing 8 steals. The Nanooks' full-court press also helped shake up the Nebraska offense. UAF's Chris Smith jump-started the Nanooks with a field goal and a three-pointer in the first few minutes of the game, starting a strong Nanook lead that lasted the first half, ending the half with a 10-point lead (34-24). Brad Oleson helped rally the Nooks defense, netting four steals -- 50% of the team's total. The second half was a back-and-forth shootout, with both teams shooting nearly 40%. The Nanooks held the lead until a surge of Nebraska three pointers tied the game up at 43. UAF committed several fouls early in the half that sent the Huskers to the line, where they shot 11-of-15. The Nanooks only went to the line eight times throughout the game. Several UAF shooters contributed to the win, with nearly every player scoring at least once and four scoring in double digits. Steve Towne was the high scorer with 13 points and shot 100% from the line. Brad Oleson checked in with 12 points and also made 100% of his free throws, Jason Williams scored 11, and Chris Smith tallied 10 points. Nebraska's Jake Muhleisen was the top scorer of the game, netting 28 points while making all three of his free throws. He was the only Husker to score in double digits. Andrew Drevo led Nebraska in rebounds, grabbing six boards. The University of Alaska Fairbanks will meet the winner of the Ball State-Weber State matchup in the championship game, Sunday, November 24 at 7 p.m. Nebraska will play for third place Sunday at 1 p.m.
I saw them play on Thursday, and they actually have a pretty good basketball team. That is, until they lost to us.
