I just saw a replay of a roughing the passer call against the Bengals in the game against Tampa Bay yesterday. So, is it about time for them to design a skirt for these pansies? The Tampa QB was straight up sacked. It wasn't even a hard hit, he just got wrapped up and taken down. I remember Brunell's consecutive streak against the Texasn should've been snapped but wasn't because of an "unnecessary shoving" call. Seriously, should we even call it football anymore if they're going to coddle these pansy QBs? Should we just say **** it, get rid of the pads and pull out the flags?
The NFL is just trigger happy about protecting players heads. From the ref's angle (one of the most respected refs in the league, btw), it looked like the TB defender purposely drove him down onto his head, whereas he could have tackled him a number of other ways. Turns out he was driven onto the turf on his shoulder with his head smacking the ground as a result, not intentional, just the kind of crap that can happen on any tackle. Bad call for sure, but I can almost understand why he made it. However, the circumstances under which it was called (time running out, game winning drive, etc) would have kept me from ever making that kind of call. edit: i wrote 'turd' instead of turf. i rule.
Are you sure we're talking about the same play? It was a Cincy sack, not TB. And the ref had pretty much the same view as the one they just showed on PTI. Terrible, terrible call.
Indeed it was, refs are definitely overprotecting the QBs. Might as well put a red shirt on em and tell them you're not allowed to hit em.
Well ... in the light of what happened to Trent Green a few weeks ago, I can understand why they're trying so hard to protect QBs. But that doesn't excuse them from making bad calls and punishing defenses unnecessarily.
