Seeing how many here like to pass themselves off as 'good food' connoisseurs... I thought I'd get your opinions on the subject of good Tex-mex.. Haven't had any in a LONG time.. LONG. Now, I'm gonna start of by asking about a possibly bland or not very good choice.. But, that's why I post this thread.. Is Pancho's Mexican Buffet any good anymore? If not, what would you suggest? Be as objective as possible. And, I remind you, this is about the food not the service or waiting staff or atmosphere. Thanks in advance.
I live in League City, and I really enjoy Estabans here. Best chips and salsa, and many of their specialties are better than any other Tex-Mex restuarant I know.
You're asking Tex-Mex connoisseurs to comment on..... PANCHO'S???!!!! look...the "fly the flag for service" novelty is fantastic. but if you live in or are visting Houston, don't settle for Pancho's!!! there's cheap Tex-Mex out there that is still very, very good.
Benign nailed it... El Tiempo is without a doubt my favorite Tex-Mex in the Houston area, with Ninfa's on Navigation a solid 2nd.
i still firmly believe that pappasito's has the best beef fajitas anywhere. and great salsa. in fact, their my personal favorite tex-mex joint. however, i am ashamed to admit, as a native houstonian, that have never been to either el tiempo or the original ninfas...
I second Original Ninfa's. I also second Esteban's. I used to live there in high school. Behad have you been to Melly's in South Shore? I think they're pretty awesome too. Their green salsa is crazy.
I'm from Iowa and even I know Pancho's sucks. El Tiempo is great, it's on Washington. I went there all the time when I went to Creek. If you are looking for out of the way places with good food, I like Juanita's. A cloud of smoke hits you at the door and it's next to a strip club, what more could you ask?
Richmond @ Eastside What's the Mexican restaurant on Richmond that open 24 hours? I was thinking it was El Tiempo, but from looking at their website it wasn't. Because someone will say it, it also wasn't Taco Cabana...
1990. I was there when SSH was just a mud pit. I was by there for the first time in quite a few years last week. They did a major facelift to it.
El tiempo is Tex-mex that doesn't have the best handle on some Tex mex staples....like cheese enchiladas or hard shell tacos (Pappasitos does both of those better). Still, however you want to categorize it, it has Mex influences, and of all Mex influenced restaurants in the world--all hyperbole aside--it is far and away the best. The head chef is one of Ninfa's grandsons, and....I'm sorry....the original Ninfa's on navigation NEVER got it as good as El Tiempo does. Sure, the green sauce may be Ninfa's recipe, but she never made it so good. Even the rice and beans are something heavenly. The fajitas are the best I've ever had, and they bring them out to the table in a brazier with real buring mesquite coals to keep them warm (how the place doesn't get smokey is beyond me). Their corn tortilas are homemade (as are the flour), and they are the best I've ever had. Make sure you don't die before you have one of their crab enchiladas. Same thing for the beef short ribs. Only complaint: the margaritas have dropped in strength....they used to be the strongest in town.
No question about this one---Pappasito's is absolutely my favorite restaraunt. The beef fajitas are incredibly tasty, love their salsa and homemade tortillas, and their margaritas are awesome. Great TexMex chow, wish they had one here in El Paso.
A an expert and connosieur-Panchos is delicious and nutritious. Eat there several times a week. Seriously though-- El Tiempo is very good- on Westheimer. My favorite is Cyclone Anayas in Mid town - across form Farrago.
I'll be honest. I'm pretty partial to Los Cucos for their selection alone. Shrimp stuffed fried avacado is great! I agree with my fellow SWT alumnus that Pappasitos has the best beef fajitas.
