Well, after lunch today at Schlotzkys, I recalled a great little local sandwich shop I grew up with that tasted like their sandwiches, only they were better. Sadly, they closed their doors in the early 90's, never to be heard from again. So that got me to thinking "what other great local places did I grow up with that are no longer here?" Feel free to chime in with some. Here are the first few that popped into my head: Zappos-grew up with these Shlotzky type sandwiches when it was in Meyerland. If you never had them, you missed out. JoJo's-The food here was on par with Denny's, but it was our local version. I still recall climbing into their "fishbowl" window everytime I went there as a child. UR Cooks-ok, this one sucked. I still recall going there for a high school dance and cooking my filet mignon so rarely, I threw up at the dance the rest of the evening. It was a unique concept, though. San Francisco Steak House-C'mon, you get a Steak, and have scantily clad women swinging around on trapezes. How did this place fail? Boston Sea Party-All you can eat seafood for $19.99. Actually, I can see why this concept wouldn't work. So, what other places am I missing?
JOJO's!! Man I remember that place, and I used to do the same thing! Their potato skins were the bomb!
It was actually Boston Sea Party, and yeah, I remember it being good. I'd go and eat King Crab Legs all night long!
Tinsley's Chicken. the chicken was okay but the honey and rolls were great. we used to eat there on Fridays before football games.
I miss Panjo's Pizza big time. I'd love to find pizza that good again, but it does not exist in our fair city right now. JoJo's was our late night spot in high school. Met up with friends there after dates.
I think so. Sadly, even though it's only a mile away, I can never get anyone to want to go. I'm serious. I've tried sporadically to get someone to go for over a decade.
Never been to Panjo's, but I emplore you to please try the pizza at Lucky's pub this year. The place is right next to MMP, so you don't have an excuse not to try it. RM Tex and I thought it was the best pizza in town these days.
I think it has been closed since Ike. We were looking into going there for New Year's Eve and it had not reopened. We went years ago a few times and always had a good meal and enjoyable evening.
Don't know if you had any in Houston but we had a Rax up here in my town. It's a restaurant similar to Arby's. I read that it is now down to 11 locations in the U.S.
Interesting. I didn't know that. I just checked their website, and it says it is "temporaily closed due to renovations." I guess we will see. Hell, the Ruggle's on Westheimer is still closed since Ike, and I know for a fact that they will be reopening.
Tony Roma's Obviously you Texans who have the luxury of having non-chain, authentic BBQ will disagree but I grew up eating Tony Roma's at least once a month before they moved out of Oregon several years ago. Baby back ribs with Carolina Honey sauce, loaded baked potato and coleslaw. Heaven on a plate. Especially when they had all you can eat rib night I did some serious damage. Just typing this brings back fond memories and it's making me crave ribs.
The original Antone's on Main. My Dad used to take me there as a kid every Saturday morning after my haircut. I know you can still get their subs, but there was just something about the original location. It closed a few years ago. I might have even started a thread about it.
For the life of me, I can't remember any places I went as a child... I do remember Peter Piper Pizza but it's still open today.
