I know some people in here are pretty fascinated with sharks so I thought I'd drop this programming note to my fellow cc.netters. Starting tonight at 8 pm central, the Discovery Channel will have Shark Week. Tonight they'll have a show about South African sharks that jump in the air to capture their prey. I can't wait to check this out. Also this entire week, they'll be showing Shark programs at 8 pm and 12 am central time. If you miss the shows, they'll replay them all next Sunday! Enjoy...
Man i hate shark week. You sit your ass outside about a 100yrs outside in the gulf after watching shark week previously. I'll be damned if your heart doesn't skip a few beats over a little ass clump of seaweed hitting your feet. Damn shark week to hell and all the kooks who get off on it!
Shark week rules. Besides, it's not like the Gulf has Great Whites and Tigers infesting its waters. A little sand shark never hurt anyone. Except of course those doofuses you read about in the Darwin Awards who grab a shark by the tail and are then (big surprise here) bitten. If you just shuffle your feet when you're walking in the water, the sharks will get out of your way.
subtomic, I can tell you've never been out past the first sandbar. Shuffling your feets cute and all but when your ass is paddling out in surfisde you better get on that board and prepare for about a hundred yard of duck dives. Sub, theres most defintitely tiger sharks right off the coast of gulf of Mexico and great whites are certainly not frobidden from the muddied Gulf. Also, a Bull shark or a Hammerhead both frequent right offshore and each one of them bastards will easily mistake a dangling leg in the dark muddy waters of the gulf of mexico for a waddling bait fish. So dont be a barney and tell a a young man whos been surfing ever since he was ten, whos now 24, that he'll be in the clear if he just shuffles his feet, steering the away the petty sandshark. lol
Great White in the Gulf ? I'm not sure there's ever been a citing on the Texas side anyway. I do know that sharks linger around the swimmers. I had a friend who rode in a helicopter, and he said he saw plenty of sharks amongst the swimmers.
Check out the current issue of Reader's Digest (don't laugh). It has a great story about the first recorded shark attacks in US newspapers around 1915 along the NJ-NY coastline.
Yeah...kind of difficult to shuffle your feet when your paddling out past the break at Surfside . As long as I was with(in my surfing days) other people, then I feel better when surfing there or anywhere else. I hate when I get separated, I'm way out past the break alone, and feel like a damn minnow in a tank with an Oscar! I used to get freaked out and get out of there quick catching the next wave to shore. Slim chances but...still...I don't want to be part of any of those stats. That's hilarious....I've never been a feet shuffler myself but I would do it to find off stingrays rather than sand sharks. On another note, the Great Whites jumping out of the water on this show is nuts. Kind of makes some of those scenes in "Deep Blue Sea" seem more realistic...haha...like when Sam Jackson gets speared and pulverized giving his manly lecture about survival. Some of these scenes where the great white does a vertical leap in the air....unreal. I shudder when I think of surfing around sharks. I like to pretend I was naive and there weren't really any sharks lurking. But, put a camera crew in a helicopter and a fly over tells a different story. Surf
GR8, shorebreak swimmers are p*****s, don't compare guys who paddle out so far out into the gulf that have a hard time getting a visual on a pair of girls with big hooters strolling on the beach, to swimming kooks 40 feet from shore who get giddy over getting wedgies from knee-high grinders. To know what im talking about, bring your ass down to surfside and jump off the end of the jetty, then you'll understand. lol
I'm not saying there are no sharks in the Texas Gulf waters, but come one, when was the last shark attack in Surfside??? In fact, all the shark attacks I've heard about were in Port Aransas. I realize there's not much distance between the two spots, but still we've had what - 2 shark attacks in the last 10 years. And I've actually been in the water where the sharks were visible so spare me your I've been past the 1st sandbar bit. The reason surfers tend to get attacked by sharks is because they look like seals. But here in the Gulf we don't exactly have a big seal population so the sharks are less likely to attack surfers. In fact, the Gulf doesn't have any animals that are big and numerous enough to support a population of large sharks. And the waters are too warm for Great Whites - maybe a Tiger is in there but they tend to hang around Florida. I certainly wouldn't suggest that you splash around in the Gulf with an open wound (although even then you'd be more likely to die from infection than a shark ). But surfer or no surfer, you're still more likely to die driving to the beach than swimming in the Gulf.
