Flatulence, not turbulence forces plane landing in Nashville

Flatulence brought 99 passengers on an American Airlines flight to an unscheduled visit to Nashville early Monday morning.

American Flight 1053, from Washington Reagan National Airport and bound for Dallas/Fort Worth, made an emergency landing here after passengers reported smelling struck matches, said Lynne Lowrance, a spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority.

The plane landed safely. The FBI, Transportation Safety Administration and airport authority responded to the emergency, Lowrance said.

The passengers and five crew members were brought off the plane, together with all the luggage, to go through security checks again. Bomb-sniffing dogs found spent matches.

The FBI questioned a passenger who admitted she struck the matches in an attempt to conceal body odor, Lowrance said. The woman lives near Dallas and has a medical condition.

The flight took off again, but the woman was not allowed back on the plane.

"American has banned her for a long time," Lowrance said.

She was not charged but could have been. While it is legal to bring as many as four books of paper safety matches onto an aircraft, it is illegal to strike a match in an airplane, Lowrance said.

One of the oddest stories I've heard. At least they didn't arrest her.

Airplanes are the best place to fart. It's typically loud enough where people don't know it's you and you're crammed in a small place with 100 other people so who could really know for sure that it's you.

Of course, like George Carlin advised, I always like to let a test fart first just in case.

What an idiot, light matches on an airplane. Just stink it up, who cares, you'll never see them again, and they probably wouldn't know it was you, unless you couldn't keep from laughing.

If I had to go, I would leave my lumber on display. I just don't trust those flushers.

I think it was an odor from a colostomy bag btw. You guys are just plain wrong.

Of course there was a reason she did not get charged.

Stupid move on her part yes... but a "medical condition" as it says indicates something uncontrollable.

If gas fills a colostomy bag, it must be let out to avoid rupture. Obviously rupturing the bag would have been far worse for everyone involved. It would most likely start a peristaltic chain reaction for sure on a plane.

In case you do not know, a colostomy is an opening directly from outside the body into the intestinal tract, located on the abdomen... very common in cancer patients. This bag has to be changed, in similar fashion to a diaper, when filled with excrement (and there is no control over when it fills), and/or gas must be relieved from it by a small valve in order for it to do its intended job. Imagine not being able to naturally pass gas and having to open a valve directly open to insides... travel can make it worse.

Typically, the smell associated with a diseased colon is much more putrid than a "healthy" toot. I have had relatives go through this... that's how I know. I feel sorry for the lady in the story. :(

(while my response is no joke, you may insert your "Debbie Downer" picture here.)

Very interesting. I had always heard of this condition, but I didn't know how it worked.

Wouldn't the plane explode, since fart is mostly composed of flammable gases?
