Kudos to the parents and community being able to accomodate this, but if you don't have that kind of support you probably need to put the pecker-cutter in a low-security outpatient facility with the rest of his ilk, then re-evaluate at 10, 13 and 16 for both competency/release and, if he still wants it, full on gender re-assignment. God, what a bait-and-switch.

I'd understand if he/she is a teenager but is the mind of a 5 year old developed enough to make that type of a decision?

At least change name from Zach.

    This is my issue.

Western Society has developed this new ideal
that kids come out of the woumb with all this knowledge
    and wisdom
    and
that they are responsible, rational beings without being taught anything
    in fact
we beleive they maybe more 'honest, truthful and wise' than those
    of use tainted by time.

The child worship thing is getting out of hand.
Children are what they are taught to be . .. either by being taught or lack of being taught.

I bristle at the thought of a 5 yr old making a life altering decision

So does that mean when I was five and wanted to be a dog my parents should have let me stay home all day, pee outside, and roll around in the mud? When you're five, you want a lot of things its the parents job to mold you and direct you. This has got to be a bad joke or something.

Yes and no – it's likely she already knows and understands (as had some of my friends who have made corrections), but the UK won't allow anything permanent until much later.

Seriously, megakudos to the parents who have dealt with this responsibly rather than from a position of ignorance.

Actually, Eastern societies are frequently much more open to flexibility in sex and gender. Hijra in India, fa'afafine in Samoa, etc.

Yes because responsible parenting means that you should always let your 5 year old do what they want to do.

How about no? Plenty of young boys like Dora the Explorer and pretty dresses. They don't become girls.

If I spank my 5 year old, I might get brought up on child abuse charges and probably lose custody of him for a while. Yet if I neglect my parental duties and take the easy way out by allowing him to do whatever he wants because I want to be his friend, that's a much better option?

People who struggle with gender identity issues are often marginalized and treated like **** in Western society. This isn't child worship. This is acceptance of how the child is. Most transgender people I have known have been forced to repress themselves since a very young age. Many have to deal with unsupportive families who can't accept them and are stuck with the scars of depression and suicidal thoughts due to their outcast nature in Western society.

Acceptance of transgender children is more common in some southeast Asian societies, some Pacific island societies, and even among some American Indian tribes and it is not a form of child worship.

He was officially diagnosed as having the brain of a girl.

[rquoter]Ms Avery, who has three other children, told the Daily Telegraph that Zach's anguish at being a boy was such that "he used to cry and try to cut off his willy out of frustration."

Eventually NHS doctors officially diagnosed Zach with GID, one of the youngest affected children in the UK.

Ms Avery said: "They told us that although he had a male body, his brain was telling him he was a girl."[/rquoter]

It only takes one doctor to get a diagnosis. And they aren't always right. And with situations like this, it is impossible for a doctor to prove something one way or another.
