Link to hi-res pic It's pretty hard to make any super hero costume not look silly in real life. With Spiderman, they gave the fabric that cellular pattern so it wasn't just plain blocks of blue and red. They used darker tones than what's usually used in the comics. They also changed the black web pattern and spider to rubber and raised it. They also had the Tobey and the stuntmen wear a foam body suit to give them a more muscular look. Here you can see they try some of the same tricks, but I think they've made some mistakes, IMHO. They should make that shield on his chest bigger so that there's a little less blue. I find myself looking at the empty space right under the shield. That S on the belt is redundant. There's no reason for him to go Donald Trump on his costume. They should have made the waist line on the trunks higher, again, to break up the plain blue space. They kind of look like a standard pair of speedos the way they are now.
I think they are trying to make him look taller with the large blue area between the shield and the speedos, but I agree with your criticism - plus the boots really suck.
Those DULL red colors on the '50s dude in the first photo make him look like he's in the 60's. EDIT: The red color looks like when I used to go P P on my RED pants when I was little. Carry on, gentlemen and ladies...
It wouldn't be ME if I didn't do that . But then again, I really really really hate Karl Malone and the JAZZ .
The hard part about superman is that the character devlopment is not as conflicted and probably doesn't translate as well for adults. Kids will love it. They always do.

My two cents: First and foremost: the guy looks WAY too young The dark red looks crappy The small S on chest wouldn't be so bad if the guy had any ab muscles The waistline is way too low Honestly, I thought Reeve's costume was just fine, though a more muscular actor would have made it look better. And I thought that an older guy (like the one in that fan-based 'Robin' trailer) looks a lot better as Superman. I think they're going young because they feel that they have to in order to get a younger crowd to watch. What they don't realize is - a younger crowd is going to laugh at this guy. -- droxford
Everyone is going for that washed out color-on-gray look now. That's the new hip thing to do I guess. Sin City took it to the furthest extreme, but this still has that to a degree.
I thought he looked too young the first time I saw a pic of him after he was cast, but it turns out he's the same age Reeve was when he started. Reeve was just perfect. Man, it would help if the boots were taller as well. Another thing I hope they realized and fixed for actual filming is that Superman and Clark Kent part their hair on different sides.
