First Lady Michelle Obama steps out in Lanvin sneakers and they're only $540!

Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.

While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.

That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.

They're out of stock at posh Meatpacking District boutique Jeffrey, and Barneys New York boasts a limited selection of the sneaks, which are a cult favorite among fashionistas.

It's likely Michelle got hers through Ikram, the Chicago retailer that often outfits her.

"They're shoes," the First Lady's reps sniffed when curious reporters inquired about the fancy footwear.

Michelle has stepped out in Lanvin before while getting down to business. A week ago, she shoveled dirt at a tree planting while wearing the line's chiffon tank.

Dresses and strappy pumps cost upward of $1,500, while tops go for $400 to $1,000.

Other celebrity fans of Lanvin's costly kicks include Ellen DeGeneres and Kanye West, who has blogged about his faves.

As the family's primary dog walker, Michelle clearly requires comfortable footwear.

"I got up at 5:15 in the morning to walk my puppy," she joked Thursday. "That's how my day starts. Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out."

She'll be trodding on New York's sidewalks Tuesday for the first time as First Lady. Michelle will meet with staff at the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Later, she headlines Time magazine's "100 most influential people" gala.

Did she pay for them herself - with her or her husband's earned income?

If so, she can waste her own money on whatever stupid trinkets she wants. If she used public money that is another mater, but I see no indication that this was alleged.

The Obama family is very rich. Their books sold like hotcakes. They had an income of 4 mil in 2007 and 2.6 in 2008 I think I remember.

I wish she would buy american though. We don't make any 500 dollar shoes? What about those custom made Nike's?

What an embarrassment she is. Possibly even worse than Teresa Heinz Kerry would have been. Just ridiculous.

you know that the Obama administration is doing superb when the wingnuts have nothing better to criticize than the shoes Michelle Obama was wearing..

keep this up, and good luck in the 2012 elections ;)

I don't understand why so many people troll here. Most posts are either just attack the poster or off the wall comments. If you dislike the thread why click and then once you see it why reply?

Sometimes the Obamas' common sense is just pitifully absent. Making fun of Special Olympians, wearing designer shoes to feed the homeless....use your brain, please.

    lol win.

Meanwhile, conservative obsession with the asinine continues to have them reading page for page, line for line, word for word from the How To Lose An Election To An Incumbent President Handbook.

I agree. I sense that I will have indefatigable interest in this topic for about another 3 years and 7 months. I encourage much research into Michelle's footwear, with biting analysis and criticism, during that time.

    O RLY?

    December 13, 2008
President George W. Bush buys 8,501-square-foot house in Dallas’ Preston Hollow neighborhood.

The following month, however, Bush did go ahead and purchase a house in Preston Hollow, which is at 10141 Daria Place, which was built in 1959 and which sits on a 1.13-acre parcel, according to public records. The house had not been on the market, and Bush made the purchase in the name of his accountant, Robert McCleskey, closing on the deal on October 1, 2008 (deal recorded on October 3, 2008). Local officials do not require that property sale amounts be made public (which is incredibly annoying for celebrity real estate snoops like us). However, the good news is that mortgage amounts there *are* made public, and records show that the president took out a $3,074,239 mortgage. Bush reportedly will be buying the 4,684-sqare-foot house next door, at 10151 Daria Place, ostensibly for the Secret Service’s use, but records do not show yet that a sale has closed on that house (that house had been listed for $1,679,900, and its longtime owner, Joan Northway, died in October 2003 at age 76; the house reportedly is empty at present).
