kenny atkinson, the hard working player development coach of the rockets, is leaving to be the 4th assistant for the new york knicks. at first the rockets would not let him out of his contract, but they changed their mind and now he is going to work for d'antoni who he knows thru his playing and working in europe. he is a great coach, a great worker, and like coop, he will be sorely missed. but he gets to go back home to coach and be close to his family.
****. Wasn't he instrumental in Landry's development? I was looking forward to him getting his hands on Greene.
This guy was actually much more important than people realize. He will be missed. He was instrumental in all the young guys development.
I think this just goes to show that this is a good organization and a lot of the staff are good candidates to be promoted into better positions with other teams. Happens a lot with the Spurs too - and their management structure isn't bad to be associated with.
Well, two long term staffs left in the last 30 days, that tells you something about the Rox Organization... Stop being so cheap Les...
True, if a company can offer a future for a staff, then money isn't everything, because the future would pay off someday for the "low pay" now.. But if the future is taken out of the picture, then money means a lot... Personally, I don't buy that family excuse. He has been with the Rox for a while, why all sudden he starts to feel he should "stay closer to his family"?
I am beginning to think Morey may not be the easiest guy to work with. Two years on the clock and a coaching staff and 3 long time employees are gone. We better start winning something or stuff like this doesn't fly quite as well.
they are moving up, not laterally. With every job, no matter how great the perks seem, there is always a step up. And if someone gets the chance to move, good for them.
[/IMG] JVG wasn't easy to work with. As far as Morey, I think its just a case of old school vs new school. Old School = CD New School = Morey
I'm fine with these guys leaving as long as we are putting better people in their place, if not, don't let them go.
JVG went from an NBA head coach to doing tv commentary. I consider that moving down. The rest of the assistant coaches split for lateral moves.
There are only 30 NBA teams, so if you want to move up, you gotta take the available opportunity in whatever city that offers the first opening. Cooper and Atkinson both appear to want to get on the head coaching track, and want to move in to more formal assistant roles when Adelman's staff is already filled. That's why they are seeking opportunities elsewhere. It's no different than Elston Turner interviewing for PHX head coach job. Limited opportunities, smoke'em when you got'em.
