i am looking for some sort of internet security software or hardware firewall for a pretty small office. the office has 3 employees but the software package they are using requires that it needs to be run on a server. so the server is running 2003 server and two other PCs are running XP. i know it overkill for such a small office. the manager remotely connects from home also. i have yet to find any internet security software or antivirus that supports 2003 server. if any of you have any suggestions on some type of software or hardware i can purchase for this company to help protect them. being such a small company they are on a budget and dont want to spend over $600.

Get a router with built-in hardware firewall

    It's faster

i am not sure if those firewall that are included with routers will provide enough protection. the office is a psychologist offifce so there will be some sensative personal data on the server.

What other kind do you expect to use? A software firewall?? You may want to tell companies like Cisco their routers aren't good enough for you. ;)

I think he means that some cheap dsl router from BestBuy won't provide the level of security he needs. At least I hope that is what he means.

A hardware router will be good enough unless you are some huge company that would be a target of cracking attempts.

A properly configured NAt router/firewall with tight permissions configured on the server will be adequate to protect you.

What you do is install the router/firewall and forward to the server only the ports you need for VPN(which allows the boss to connect from home)...make sure the permissions are set at the server to protect from anyone unauthorized to get thru.

It is entirely possible for even a consumer level router/NAT firewall with VPN capabilities to provide you the protection you need.(EDIT: I dont necessarily mean a broasdband router from BestBuy...but one a level or two up from them)

Just make sure that whoever installs it knows what they are doing security wise.
There are tons of guys out there that can install things....but there arent a ton that are actually good at it.

I'm bright enough to read exactly what you typed - you're bright enough to type exactly what you typed. I'm sorry you can't convey your meanings any better than you did. Good luck in your search.
