I downloaded the beta of the new Firefox the other day. After downloading it my wireless card that is embedded on my mobo (I have a Dell laptop running XP Pro) started acting up, dropping the signal from my wireless router every five to ten minutes. I left it for two days doing this, then finally got fed up and decided that it had to be Firefox that was screwing up my wireless card (yeah, I know, unlikely). I uninstalled the beta through add/remove programs in the control panel and reloaded 1.07. Of course, 1.07 doesn't work. The firefox window comes up with address bar and all the buttons, but doesn't load my homepage. I can use minimize, maximize, and close the program from the buttons on the top left. I can click reload or homepage, but neither of them do anything. I can see but can't type in the address bar. It's like the program is halfway frozen. I tried opening a link in Firefox, the same thing happens. IE works fine, well, as fine as it ever works. I tried using the Firefox standard homepage. It won't load that either. And my wireless card is still acting up. I've tried resetting the router, the wireless card, repairing the wireless card, etc. Nothing helps. It could be just a coincidence that it happened right after I installed the beta, but I can't think of anything else that changed before it started acting up. Every time that I've loaded a different version of Firefox (I've tried 1.07 several times now), I've uninstalled the version I currently had on the system first. Any ideas?
Ahh, the joy of betas... When you uninstall Firefox did you also search and clean out the registry? As far as the wireless card goes are you using a Dell Latitude? If so unscrew the cover over the wireless card (should be on the bottom of the laptop on the right hand side about a 3x3" square) and make sure the two cables to the wireless antenna are still attached (one black wire, one white wire). The antenna goes up and around your screen and if it is disconnected that may be the reason for your wireless troubles, I doubt that Firefox had anything to do with it but with betas it could have corrupted some settings on your machine.
Try creating a new profile -- probably the switch to 1.5 Beta 2, and then back has made your profile no longer work -- I doubt that it's backwards compatible like that. You can go to: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\ (or something like that -- I'm on linux so I'm not sure what it is specifically). In there, you'll find your profile. It's a folder -- I usually like to just rename it currentname.old. Then start firefox again. It will create a new profile and it should work just fine. Then, you can get your bookmarks out of your old profile and import them into your new one. I haven't had any problems with 1.5 Beta 2 -- works great for me.
I ended up going back to the beta, which works fine, since my wireless card has continued acting up. Any other ideas on what might be causing me wireless problems? I haven't had a chance to check the wires.
i had the same problem with 1.07, im still using 1.06. dont know how it would affect ur wireless though
The Firefox 0.9 betas gave me problems until 1.0 was finally released. I will never use another Firefox beta.
agreed, i love the freaking automatic updates and the extensions are keepin up wiht the beta releases.
Svpernaut, I checked the 3"x3" square (again, I have a Inspiron 8200, not a Latitude) and there's only one wire that I can see at all and it's grey. It appears to be connected fine. I also checked under the bigger square which has the memory under it. It has a piece marked as the modem with a black wire plugged securely into it, but nothing else. I know it's not my router, because my roommate's laptop is having no problems staying connected. Any other ideas? This is driving me nuts.
I have a Toshiba laptop and it seems that whenever I reformatted my computer and installed the new drivers, I would get the same wireless dropping problem Generally, reinstalling the driver solved the problem. Sometimes I would turn the wireless card on and off (there's a switch to do that on my laptop) Basically, I would keep doing small things like this and eventually the problem stopped. Call your tech support line and see if they have heard of this problem. If you get lucky you might get someone who will fix your problem.
Thanks geeimsobored. I have reformatted my laptop within the last few months, but I'd reinstalled the drivers since and everything had been working fine until a week or so ago. I would call the tech support line for Dell, but I hate listening to them go through their scripts.
Yea it intermittently has gone out for me also. Try reinstalling again maybe? Yea tech support is usually worthless but if you keep tinkering with your wireless (disabling it, reinstalling drivers, physically turning it off, etc..), then maybe it will work. Hope you get it fixed up
This is getting weirder... I installed the driver for a linksys wireless pci card, plugged in said card, and disabled the wireless card that is embedded in my computer. This card is doing the same thing, regularly dropping out. My roommate's computer is still having no problems staying connected. Any ideas what would cause my computer not to stay connected? I'm really confused.
