Finley re-signs with Mavs for more than $100 million

DALLAS -- Michael Finley re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, getting a seven-year contract worth more than $100 million.

"After our playoff run last season, I am more convinced than ever that the pieces are falling into place for us to seriously contend for the NBA championship," Finley said.

Finley became a free agent when he opted out of his contract after last season. Finley has been with the Mavericks for 4 1/2 seasons.

He made the All-Star team for the second straight season this year and helped the Mavericks to a 53-29 record, their best since 1988. Finley, 6-7, led the NBA in minutes played (42 a game) and was the team's second-leading scorer at 21.5 points per game. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

"I always expected Michael to re-sign with us and he has," general manager and coach Don Nelson said. "We have built the team around him and will continue to do so."

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he was excited that Finley will be there to lead the team for a long time "and hopefully take us to championship levels."

On the radio today the question was asked of Finley, "Why did you take the 7 year deal this year instead of taking a one year max and then signing a max 7 year deal next year for more money?" A laughing Finley replied, "I may have takin some money from my kids, kids, kids but I really just wanted to put this behind me so we could just concentrate on basketball."

I just thought that was a great quote from Finley. He knows he is set for life and a few million more is not going to make much of a difference.
