Fines to be imposed for no talking -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press DALLAS (AP) _ Veteran Dallas Mavericks players have a financial incentive for making sure players communicate in defensive situations. Coach Don Nelson said Sunday that he'll assess $10 fines per infraction. ``Whenever there isn't communication on the court defensively, whether it's in practice or during a game, we're going to hand out a fine, staring with our veteran players,'' Nelson said. ``It will go by seniority, because we want to get our veteran players stepping up and getting everybody else talking defensively.'' Michael Finley and Shawn Bradley were hit with fines for instances where players didn't help out teammates by warning about screens and players switched assignments without voicing their intentions. Nelson said he had a feeling that his team isn't communicating enough on the court. ``Perhaps it'll get their attention,'' Nelson said. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/gen/wire?messageId=9350089
$10 would get the attention of average Joes like you and me, but for these guys? Nelson should try $250,000.
Avg NBA yearly salary >= $2.0m Avg Joe Q. Citizen yearly salary ~ = $35k Fine that would make JQ Citizen pay attention ~= $300 NBA fine based upon ratio of NBA salary to JQ Citiizen salary ~= $17,000. What was your favorite charity again, 'irk.
I am sure the players union would have something to say if the fines were a little bit on the higher side.
Well considering that the Mav's have horrid defense, I wouldn't be suprised if they get 10-20 fines a day (not per person.) That could end up being 16,400$ for not "talking" to your teamates on defense. Of course, there will probably be more like 1 or 2 fines a week... Too bad the Rockets aren't doing this, CD would be rich!
Ridiculous....... Are they all going to be mic'd up with Nellie and co. wearing Motorola headsets too?
