Parents shocked after scout camp features Nazis chasing Jews
    33 minutes ago

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Parents of more than 100 Danish scouts were outraged over a game of tag at a scout camp in which children acted as Jews wearing yellow Stars of David and tried to escape from adults pretending to be Nazis.

The group of about 160 scouts, aged 11-14, included a dozen teenagers from the Danish-speaking minority in northern Germany. The school yard was turned into a concentration camp with swastikas on the windows.

"I was shocked," Johanna Christiansen, a German woman, told the Ekstra Bladet newspaper on Thursday.

"It's wrong to expose children to this," said Christiansen, whose two daughters took part.

The local branch of the Danish Christian FDF scout organization organized the game last weekend at the Kongeaadal school, 260 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of Copenhagen.

Jes Imer of the local FDF chapter told the tabloid B.T. that they "may have crossed the line this time with a night game where Nazis chase Jews."

The school yard included a sign with the German words "Arbeit macht frei," or "Work will set you free," the infamous inscription over the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

"I don't know whether I should apologize," Imer told B.T., adding "I didn't want the game to hurt anyone."

None of those involved could be reached for further comment.

The individuals who planned this need to be beaten. Why anybody would think this is funny, or acceptable in any other way is too stupid to remain amongst the rest of us in society.

here's my favorite part of the story:

Jes Imer of the local FDF chapter told the tabloid B.T. that they "may have crossed the line this time with a night game where Nazis chase Jews."

Probably "I" for insensitive. The UK Holocaust Memorial Day is this week and education on the subject has been a key point, both there, and across the channel. No doubt, this "event" was dreamed up as part of the education process.

It was obviously ill-advised, but it just sounds like the orchestrators need some education themselves.....before the immediate public execution.

Ugh. This makes me think of a social studies teacher I had in 7th grade. He had a little "game" he liked to play with his classes every year to teach them what it might have felt like to be oppressed as the Jews were during the WWII era.

One day my teacher, with no explanation to us whatsoever, picked about half the kids in the class and told them they were special and would be known as the "star people." He gave them badges to wear that identified them. They were given special privledges, they got to do extra credit assignments and they got free candy at lunch time. There were posters all over the classroom that extolled the virtues of the "star people". The rest of us non-star people were made to feel pretty inferior.

The rest of us had no idea what was going on or why -- we just knew we were pissed. After about a week of this crap, we non-star people banded together and formed our own "resistance movement". We called ourselves the "planet people" and made our own badges. We brought our own candy with us to share amongst ourselves and began helping each other with our assignments so we could all get better grades. And for added emphasis we began vandalizing the "star people" posters and hanging up our own "planet people" posters all over the school. We also began leaving little threatening letters about the star people in various places in the classroom. In fact, the tension escalated to such a degree that the teacher actually ended the game long before he had planned to. He was afraid of what we planet people might do next.

He then, finally, explained to us what the simulation was supposed to be and why he had done it. He then told us that in all the years he had done it (15+) no one else had formed any type of resistance movement or counter-group. In fact, it had so surprised and upset him, he didn't think he'd be doing the game with any future classes. Once I found out that we had been unwitting guinea pigs in his experiment, I was very proud of the fact we screwed everything up for him. He deserved it.

Would I be naive if I wondered whether it may have been a misguided attempt to teach the children empathy? Do you think there was any history discussion prior, and/or whether the organizers referred to it as a 'game'? Even if they had good intentions, I can see how the parents might not think young children needed to 'experience' that.

Either way, MadMax has it right...either idiotic or insensitive.

    Exactly. :D

    Mrs. JB (uh...pardon...Emperoress... ;) )
I was a little confused about the game at first, since the 'Star of David' was the badge for Jews in Germany.

Um, are there not textbooks in Denmark where students can, ahem... read about the atrocities of the past?

I can just imagine how far enacting disgusting historical acts in the schoolyard can go.

I don't think we had an actual leader -- we were more of a collective. I did, however, handle many of the "covert" operations.

Alas, the planet people disbanded once we had acheived our goal of classroom equality. Besides, that all happened when I was living in New Jersey -- and let's just say I'm not looking for a reason to go back to "the garden state" anytime soon. :)

I had a 5th grade social studies teacher who was really unstable. She was giving us another rant about discipline in the classroom one day and one kid mumbled "nazi" under his breath. Well, she decided to teach us a history lesson: for the next two weeks, she ran the classroom as if it was Nazi Germany and we were new youth recruits! We even goose-stepped to the lunch room after class. Very tasteful. At least I could have learned some German, but she conducted class in stern English. What a rip-off.

The activity was terminated when she was fired. But now you know reason #118 as to why I am warped.
