Five students were arrested and three were hospitalized after a fight erupted at Jones High School this morning between teenagers from Houston and New Orleans - prompting Houston Independent School District leaders to say they will increase police presence at the campus.

A student from New Orleans was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for facial injuries and two Houston students - one of whom was a girl - were treated for face and rib injuries.

Two of the arrested students - 15- and 16-year-old boys - were from New Orleans. The other three boys - two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old - were from Houston. All five were charged by HISD police with disruption of school activities, a Class C misdemeanor.

HISD will not stand for these types of fights, spokesman Terry Abbott said.

"The quickest way to earn a ticket out of Jones High School and into detention is to hurt one of those students from New Orleans," Abbott said. "They've made it very clear to the Jones High School students that the children from New Orleans are our guests. We must treat them with all the dignity and respect we can.''

New Orleans students are also being reminded that they must follow the rules, he said.

About 200 evacuees, many of whom are bused from Reliant Center, attend Jones High School.

The fight broke out at 8:15 a.m., when students were arriving by bus. A Jones High School student tossed a soft drink can into a group of New Orleans students, Abbott said.

About 20 to 25 students were involved in the altercation.

All of the students who were arrested will be placed at alternative sites, Abbott said.

Not a suprise. Which begs the question: How long until an area of Houston is dubbed 'Little New Orleans'?

So the fight was because they were from Louisiana? Is that why the soda can was thrown? Otherwise, isn't this just a fight among a group of kids like any other?

Yeah, but who won. Houston lost everything last weekend. We need some wins.

So when 5 students get arrested and 3 hospitalized from an incident AT SCHOOL, it's no big deal? I guess private school is looking like a better option these days.

Actually, on average, there are several fights in schools in every major city every week. Police or public school police break up fights and deal with problems usually a few times a week.

Kids don't often go to the hospital but arrests are not uncommon.

Anyone ever have their whole school get in a food fight. We had 3 floors, with three lunchrooms, probably well over 2,000 students. All three flipping over tables for barricades. You could literally hear the ceiling and floor rumble as this was happening. The walls were made of non-break glass, but they were so covered in food, you couldn't see out of the lunchroom. They had to evacuate the school. It wasn't organized, as far as I know, it just happened. Good times. That's about as close a school fight as I remember, but I'd say we had probably had 5 fights a year that drew blood.

We didn't have any real good brawls in my school while I was there that I remember. Most of our fights were at parties with other schools.

The year before I got into high school, there was a major riot that was between different races (I think black and white, but not sure). There were racial tensions in my middle school, so I was scared as hell to go to high school. Luckily, they really cleaned up the school for a while and I don't remember any real racial tension for the four years that I was there.

Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing I'd expect. We're starting to enter the point when all the good cheer and hospitality starts to give way to grumbling and tension. The closing of Reliant Park as a shelter is almost guaranteed to lead to flare ups.

Somewhere out there a news manager said to his news team:

"I want to find out what's wrong with the relief efforts.
I want to find out who's to blame for the relief effort problems.
I want to find people who are abusing the relief effort system.
I want to find scam artists who are leeching off of the relief effort system.
I want to get some racial finger-pointers to talk about the relief system.
I want to find people who are offended by terms like "black", "ghetto", "evaccuees", or anything else
I want to find fights and crime that occurs between evacuees and residents.
I want to put cameras and mikes in these people's faces.
I want to find as many dead bodies as possible.

C'mon people! Let's pour some gasoline on this fire! We've got to milk this disaster for all we can!

Until the ratings are higher for the better stories, this is how it will be. I'm still surprised that people are still surprised.

It doesn't surprise me. This is why I don't watch the news any more. It glamourizes and exploits everything negative in life. A total downer.

I used to watch the news all the time in order to stay updated and educated on matters of importance. What I found was that I ended up being constantly grumpy and miserable. Eventually, I just got fed up with being constantly bombarded with bad news. I stopped watching/reading. It quickly became evident to me just how much the news companies exploit disaster.

They've always got to find the biggest fire that's burning somewhere, and when they find it, they have to pour as much gasoline on it as possible.

Afreakingmen. I'm not going to put all the blame on the media because they don't do it out for morbid reasons, IMO. They do it because that's what sells.
