Space tourist, crew blast off for station

    By MIKE ECKEL

    The Associated Press

U.S. entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari is the world's first female space tourist.

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan — A Russian rocket carrying a new U.S.-Russian crew for the international space station, along with the world's first female space tourist, blasted off from the desolate steppes of Kazakhstan today.

Engineers at Baikonur cosmodrome launched the Soyuz TMA-9 capsule hours after the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis pulled away from the orbiting station and began its journey Earthward.

Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin and U.S. astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria will join German astronaut Thomas Reiter on the station two days after liftoff, replacing cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov and astronaut Jeffrey Williams, who have been on the station since April.

Joining Tyurin and Lopez-Alegria in the ride up to the station — and Vinogradov and Williams on the ride down 10 days later — is Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American telecommunications entrepreneur who paid a reported $20 million to become the fourth private astronaut to travel on a Russian spacecraft and visit the space station.

On Sunday, Ansari, 40, said she viewed herself as an ambassador for attracting private investment to space flight.

Ansari said the Soyuz-TMA capsule was not unlike the first-generation Russian space capsules from decades ago.

"In order to make great leaps in space exploration ... private companies and the government need to work together," she said.

Astronaut Lopez-Alegria pointed out that space flight was not for the lighthearted, and said just a few years ago he was skeptical of private tourists. But he said now it was clear the Russian space program needed such investment and without the Russian space program, the U.S. program would suffer.

Ansari said she hoped seeing Earth from space for the first time would change her point of view of the planet.

"You'll see how small and how fragile the Earth is compared to the rest of the universe," she said. "It will give us a better sense of responsibility."

She's quite hot. Much hotter than most of the women that have gone into space thus far.

One day I was looking at a poster of all NASA astronauts and was only able to find one woman I found attractive.

You shouldn't live life so fast. Slow down, enjoy the moment.

Seriously, she kind of looks like Catherine Keener (40 Year old Virgin) to me, especially in the 3rd pic.

In the shot where she has the black hat on you can see the Ansari X Prize logo. She and her husband have put up a lot of money to encourage the space industry in the private sector, she deserves the trip.

Uhh, she looks like a mom. I mean like a soccer mom. She probably wears mom jeans. There's nothing wrong with, and it doesnt make her less of a person or anything, but I don't get it...

I believe I read somewhere she's from Plano, but I could be wrong...A very attractive tourist, I'd hit it...

I didn't know she was the 4th tourist, but for $20MM, not bad if this was pocket change...

Hate to burst your bubbles, especially with a long article...

    Outer-space sex carries complications

LAS VEGAS - Having sex in the weightlessness of outer space is the stuff of urban legends and romantic fantasy — but experts say that there would be definite downsides as well.

Spacesickness, for instance. And the difficulty of choreographing intimacy. And the potential for sweat and other bodily fluids to, um, get in the way.

"The fantasy might be vastly superior to the reality," NASA physician Jim Logan said here Sunday at the Space Frontier Foundation's NewSpace 2006 conference. Nevertheless, Logan and others say the study of sex and other biological basics in outer space will be crucial to humanity's long-term push into the final frontier.

    ....

However, off-Earth romantics will have to cope with some practical challenges:

    * Sex in space would likely be "hotter and wetter" than on Earth, Bonta said, because in zero-G there is no natural convection to carry away body heat. Also, scientists have found that people tend to perspire more in microgravity. The moisture associated with sexual congress could pool as floating droplets.
    * The physics of zero-G make the mechanics of sex more complicated. Bonta said it was challenging even to kiss her husband during a zero-G simulation flight they took recently. "You actually have to struggle to connect and stay connected," she recalled. Partners would have to be anchored to the wall and/or to each other. To address that need, Bonta has come up with her own design for garments equipped with strategically placed Velcro strips and zippers.
    * Although zero-G could be a boon for saggy body parts, Bonta said males might notice a "slight decrease" in penis size due to the lower blood pressure that humans experience in microgravity.
    * Romantics will also need to guard against the type of motion sickness that space travelers often encounter, especially if they get too adventurous right off. "Save the acrobatics for post-play vs. foreplay," Bonta advised.

For all these reasons, Logan said spontaneous sex in space could be "a little underwhelming."

"It's a pretty messy environment, when you think about it," he said. "And for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. However ... I can well imagine how compelling, inspiring, and quite frankly stimulating choreographed sex in zero-G might be in the hands of a skilled and talented cinematographer with appropriate lighting and music."

    continued in article...

I guess doggiestyle in space would look more like dog chasing his own tail.

I thought you may be referring to the tragedies that the Shuttle program has seen with women aboard...

    But mum's the word.
