Progress is slow. But tangible results have showed up, both positive and negative. And I think in this case, Obama has been very underrated in terms of how he has handled FEMA. Does anyone remember how Republicans were willing to pounce on that Kentucky snowstorm only to be told that, alas, FEMA operated well? It's good to know that America is safer.

Won't be long before our FEMA re-education camps will be up and running -- Obama FTW.

Come now Cheetah, as a fellow member of Obama's personal Praetorian Republican Guard Fedayeen Civilian Defense Force (otherwise known as "AmeriCorps," per today's Glenn Beck program), you know full well that we are supposed to talk in code about the Homeland Defense concentration camps, I mean, I mean "FEMA weather balloon outposts," until we get the synchronized emails from Rahm Emanuel to alert us to put on our armbands and strike! strike! for Obama and the thousand year reign of his "oligarhy."

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/H-D_S7WOnjg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/H-D_S7WOnjg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If anyone catches the repeats of Beck's show, he pegged, completely out of thin air, the approved budget for Obama's personal security apparatus at upwards of $500 billion, then came back at the end of the show and admitted that AmeriCorps' actual budget is $5 billion. (Best I can tell by a quick search, this latest figure remains inflated, no longer 500 fold, but still roughly five times.) He sheepishly admitted that he confused the figures for the actual armed forces of the United States, completely ignoring that, as he's already commander-in-chief of the most powerful army in the history of the world, Obama doesn't need a Praetorian Republican Guard Fedayeen Civilian Defense Force.

Numbers? We don't need no stinking numbers.

The first 30 seconds of this:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9J6PkLapP9o&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9J6PkLapP9o&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

    Then this ten second retraction:
    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZyhWbtA3l68&hl=en&fs=1&start=368"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZyhWbtA3l68&hl=en&fs=1&start=368" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Which is a darn shame, 'cause I wanted gilded epaulets on my Civilian Defense Force armband, heck maybe even a whole brown sleeve.

    ---

On topic, hasn't FEMA been considered a dumping ground for political appointees, basically since its inception? I think Clinton's FEMA guy (Witt, IIRC) broke that mold, either by design or by chance. Witt was a professional with relevant experience, and FEMA was generally regarded highly during his tenure. Then, FEMA reverted to a dumping ground for paying out favors, first to Bush's campaign flack and then that flack's college roomate Brown, and it went right back to formaldehyde-contaminated (Arabian horse) crap.

It would be a good thing if Obama has indeed appointed emergency professionals back to their posts. I'm interested what being folded into Homeland Security has on FEMA's longterm efficacy.
