Are they this good, is Yao? The Mavs think so

Nice of the Mavericks to bring their summer league team to town. Oh, Devin Harris and Jason Terry got a little run. Not much. And Eddie Jones played a bunch. But Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George, DeSagana Diop and Erick Dampier all either watched or were somewhere else.

So much for the Rockets finally getting a preseason test.

You do what is best for you in the preseason, and Avery Johnson did.

It would be nice, however, to have seen how much the Rockets could have done against the real Mavericks, how much of that 26-6 start would have held up against the varsity.

The Rockets looked very promising on Thursday. The starters, back to the same five as last season, clicked. Yao Ming was fabulous. Tracy McGrady made it all look easy. Mike James and Bonzi Wells looked good off the bench.

But it was all against a bunch guys they might never see get sweaty again.

"This should be a very strong team as it has a strong inside game with a lot of good outside shooters," Terry said. "They will adapt to this offense and they will flourish."

It's coming together. It looks good. But the Rockets still would like to take the new model out for a real test drive.

Darvin Ham knows. He always did. The guy was one of the league's more underrated quote machines for years. He was a sure thing at Texas Tech. He was great on the air last season when he didn't have an NBA job.

You want to know, you go to Darvin Ham.

Darvin had not seen Yao Ming up close for awhile. He saw plenty on Thursday.

"It's been awhile since I've seen that much meat on anybody on the basketball court," Ham, who did not play the past two seasons, said. "What impresses me the most is he is not passive anymore. He takes it right at you and punishes you. He is bringing the fight to the post. If Houston continues to play through him, they will be a very tough team to beat. I was thoroughly impressed by how much he has improved."

That's the thing people don't get. The guy is not just the league's top scoring center, he is just what the remaining detractors say he is not. He is dominant.

Opponents say it all the time. Yao gets plenty of respect around the league. But he has such a soft shooting touch and is so tall, people that don't know what they are watching, or don't watch at all, don't get that he plants 300-plus pounds on opponents and is relentless.

"Man, he is a load," Jackie Butler said the other day. "I'm a big guy, but 300-something pounds is a lot of man."

Yao looked terrific in the Rockets offense, again. And Fran took care of the swift Yao part of things over in the Courtside blog. The idea that he could not keep up never made any sense, as Fran has pointed out since Austin. No team ever ran better than the Showtime Lakers, but they knew enough to wait for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to join them, especially when they had to have a basket.

Yao will get attention for the shooting touch he showed on Thursday and will continue to demonstrate in Adelman's offense. But he is at his best in the low blocks. He will be there plenty, especially when the Rockets need a basket. He will be dominant.

Some won't get it. That's their loss. On this one, listen to Darvin.

Nice read. I would love to somehow miraculously be able to get every one of Yao's opponents or opposing coaches quotes stating how dominant he is. The list of quotes would easily go 3 pages. Then when the usual ignorant fan states something like "Yao is such a p*ssy" I would be able to shove that list down their throats and they would choke on it and have to be resusitated by mouth to mouth from some fat unattractive EMS worker. Maybe he would arrive late and would have to take the list out and zap them. Even if they survive they would still have unpleasant memories of the list being forced down their throats and every time they wanted to say something about Yao being soft they would instantly cringe or want to regurgitate all over themselves. That would be nice.

    Sincerely
    Jack Handy

Yeah, up at my local sports bar, everytime Yao gets scored on or blocked, all you hear is "He's too nice! Too Soft! Too Passive!"

It gets kind of redundant...

The people that still say Yao is a p*ssy don't watch the games.

They watched when he first came into the league and was a giant p*ssy.

Last night Yao did not have to work for any of his shots it seemed. He was always getting the ball within 6 feet of the basket and got a lot of easy dunks.

My favorite play was when Bonzi drove to the block Yao was on, Yao took one step in the paint. Bonzi through it to Yao over the defenders. Yao dunked. That is a 100% fg shot every time.

    Sexy.

All casual Rockets/NBA fans know that. The true Rockets fans know just how dominant Yao can be.

Good read. The only people who realize Yao is dominant are people who actually watch him play (ie Rockets fans), rather then base it off his rookie year scouting reports. Unfortunately it's not just the fans, but many 'analysts' who still do this.

Doesn't really matter though, hopefully he'll stay injury free this year and people will come around. If we reach the WCF Tmac and Yao's reputations will go to the next level...not that it matters though. Just do it.

    Dallas? Dont insult me...

Nope, Coaches. On the NW side. Everyone out here only seems to care about the Astros or college football....kind of like the local sports radio stations

Well alright. I'll take credit for bringing up the Lakers and Kareem in a post a few weeks back.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Yao has improved tremendously on the block and in his toughness. I has also VERY happy to see him out hitting the 15-18 ft jumpers. If he can hit those consistantly it opens up alot for him and the team.

However, I did see 2-3 times last night where Yao layed the ball up when it looked like he was in position to dunk it. A couple of those times he missed and was fouled. I would still like to see Yao dunk it at EVERY opportunity to get the 'and 1' rather than just 2 frees. IMO, that's the only remnent of the soft Yao of old.

I am at my parents house this weekend so I went to the game last night.

The highlights: the first few minutes (with the same starting five from last year, kind of surprisningly) were impressive, James showed some life in the second half offensively shooting and scoring, and steve added two vintage "and-1" plays just like old times but looked lost-ish otherwise.

The lowlights: Honestly I expected a bit more from Scola - Brandon Bass owned him and Landry. Also Rafer/Head/whoever got ripped badly by midget Jose Barea in the second half, theere were stretches were the Rockets on defense were a clusterf-k, especially some of their abortive attempts to play zone. I was rather unimpressed with Bonzi too, who always bothers me in a way I can't put my finger on. He seemed like the same old half-speed player who will go for the lazy reach rather than move and play defense.

oh, and the corny dog at the Toyota center is pretty good.

"It's been a while since I've seen that much meat on anybody on the basketball court," said Mavericks center Darvin Ham, who sat out the last two seasons. "What impresses me the most is he is not passive anymore. He takes it right at you and punishes you. He is bringing the fight to the post. If Houston continues to play through him, they will be a very tough team to beat. I was thoroughly impressed by how much he has improved."

Dallas guard Jason Terry went a step further.

"I'm out there and I see Mike James and Steve Francis ... and I thought, 'Oh my God, is (Hakeem) Olajuwon going to come back, too.' "

    ------------
One of my favorite quotes of the year so far.

I don't get it. Terry isn't comparing Yao to Olajuwon in that quote, but referring to all the former-Rockets that we've acquired.

Agree. I think Terry was looking at things ala 'Blast from the Past' situation....

Anyone else find it interesting that a guy named "Ham" is getting excited about much "meat" yao has?

Jackie Buttler's comment about handling "a lot of man" in practice is vaguely homoerotic.

This article is music to my ears. Of course, it's Darvin Ham, but during preseason I'll take whatever I can get. I'd much rather hear stuff like this instead of crap about how versatile Yao is and how good his jumper is.

I'm not sure, but maybe that's just because this is a preseason game. I remember right after a Maveric's slam dunk Yao answered with a dunk.
