I suppose the most important thing out of this is the list of names they seemed to have worked out/looked at :

A scout's life: The Rockets hold their own mini predraft camp

By the end of the day Tuesday, Dennis Lindsey's hamstrings will be barking. Dean Cooper's knees will be aching. The Rockets -- or at least Lindsey, the vice president of basketball operations and Cooper, the directorf of scouting -- will wonder if this was such a great idea, after all.

It really was. The Rockets might not know when or if it will pay off, but that's the way it is in scouting. You just work. You work and you hope and you never know.

So with the NBA prohibiting workouts until after last week's Orlando predraft camp, and the Rockets having little leverage to get players to work out for them, the Rockets came up with the idea of setting up workouts in Orlando right after the camp, beginning this morning. They got another team involved to have a team with a higher draft pick to attract better prospects, and then lined up dozens of players who have agreed to go through their paces.

The league made sure every team knew it could come and watch, and as many as 12 will send representatives (presumably picking up a share of the tab for the privilege.)

But Cooper and Lindsey will be on the court with the prospects, and because the NBA does not allow more than two on two work, so to simulate typical NBA plays and decision making, teams typically have to get a coach on the court.

Workouts simulate the four basics of NBA offense; pick-and-roll, pin downs, post-ups and isolation. That needs at least a third teammate and opponent. On pick-and-roll, scouts like to see decision making with a cutter and a screener. Even in iso, teams want a player to show he can make decisions which requires he read a help defender, which would not be there without a third teammate and opponent.

    Enter Cooper and Lindsey.

"We'll be hurting," Lindsey said. "Are you kidding me? We'll be on the court for eight to 10 hours."

He's not complaining. Without Rocket camp, there is no way they could work with so many prospects, many of which could be around when the Rockets choose at No. 26.

Among others, the Rockets will work out point guards Oregon's Aaron Brooks, Fullerton's Bobby Brown, Florida's Taurean Green, Marquette's Dominic James, Finland's Petteri Koponen; shooting guards and small forwards UCLA's Arron Afflalo, Ohio State's Daequan Cook, Lithuania's Renaldas Seibutis, Arizona's Marcus Williams, Rice's Morris Almond, Boston College's Jared Dudley, Australia's Brad Newley and North Carolina's Reyshawn Terry; and power forwards and centers Nick Fazekas of Nevada Aaron Gray of Pittsburgh, and A&M's Antanas Kavaliauskas and Joseph Jones.

There will be other players, especially bigs, working out in Orlando. The Rockets will have other workouts leading up to the draft.

But they will get a fast start this week in Orlando. And then, Cooper and Lindsey will be moving very slowly.

i'm not blown away by that list of players.

i thought the point of getting a head start by working out guys in orlando was to get to see players we otherwise wouldn't have had a chance to see.

i think we could've seen all of those guys. they are all projected late first-early second.

what happened to looking at guys who are projected in the mid first round range incase someone slips or we move up?

My understanding is that not many of the "guaranteed" 1st rounders...those not playing in the ORL Camp...were giving this type of workout. Is it wise to limit yourself? The Rockets currently don't have a 2nd round pick...what if they come up with one as part of a larger deal? They have zipp knowledge.

And IMO you're wrong that "we could have seen all those guys". Once the real action begins, collecting that many players in one area will be difficult at best.

Kudos to them for being so proactive.

Point guards, Kavaliauskas impress at NBA draft camp
The good news for the Rockets in the wake of the NBA draft camp in Orlando over the weekend is there will be plenty of choices at point guard come draft day.

It's been widely reported that three point guards stand above the field — Ohio State's Mike Conley, Texas A&M's Acie Law and Florida's Taurean Green.

But as you can tell from my favorite draft analysis site, NBA scouts and coaches came away believing Marist's Jared Jordan and Virginia Tech Zabian Dowdell are every bit as talented as the heralded stars. Now, whether they can make big-time plays in big-time moments, who knows. But Dowdell and Jordan definitely helped their stock, which can only help the Rockets as well.

And what else could the Rockets really use? How 'bout a hustling, hard-charging 6-10 power forward who's not afraid to mix it up, is tough and can score inside, outside and is comfortable on the pick and roll?

Antanas Kavaliauskas had a tremendous camp, consistently earning mention among the best big men in the camp.

A&M's Joseph Jones is the most heralded of the Aggie big men in the draft, but no doubt Kavaliauskas made himself a lot of money at the camp.

Future Rocket? Who knows, but he could well be an upgrade to anything they have at the power forward spot right now.

We need to trade up to get the Georgia Tech point guard Crittendon and it will probably take Luther Head and our 26th to move up around the 13th pick to ensure.

However, this will not happen until draft night. If you check the write up this guy is a point guard that will run with Yao for years to come. Plus at 6'5", he can check the Derons, Parkers, and Nashs of the world that give us fits.

these guys have to pay their own way to workouts and for accomodation. as there is no guarantee they'll even get drafted they're probably limited to working out with only several teams.

Smoothie......I'm sorry is there any guys that we have picked in the past couple of years that have blown you away? Excluding the Battier/ Gay debate......I have thought the guys we have taken have been similarly flawed....but we have to let our new staff do their work and judge accordingly.

However, we have rarely called them past gems that the Rox have missed until after the fact....so....if we don't have a lottery pick isn't safe to say that at 26 no player is going to blow you away....but if we can get a contributor....we have a couple guys already that should keep us excited.

Should we be buying donuts every morning for Morey, Lindsey and RA?
Keep them happy so they can do the best job possible.

I read one article on Petteri Koponen and now I'm sold. The Rockets will be absolutely betraying their fans if they don't pick up this sure-fire Hall-of-Famer.

I think it's cool that the Rockets were the team to innovate this process, and control the reins of it, at least this year. I can see Orlando taking our place next year, since it is in their town. But, it'd be cool if this was an annual practice -- where the Rockets run workouts on a lot of guys and everyone else can watch. While everyone else is watching, we'd still get the best data since they'll show what we want to see, not what everyone else wants to see. Hopefully, it improves our decision-making.

What if some team offers Lindsey the MLE based on these workouts?

There are some very nice clips of him on youtube. He seems to have excellent court vision, good passing, shoots pretty well and an ability to change pace. I wonder if he will be able to play with the faster PG's in the league but I get the feeling from the little I see that he might be a little behind VSpan's speed level. He is a pass first PG.

I don't know if he'll be drafted, but I'd rather have Taurean Green than JL3 going into next year. Something about having a two-time National Championship winner who has run a team of stars well (regardless of his own talent) makes me comfortable.
