I cann't believe they are doing this? Where does it stop? link Feds Seek Google Records in p*rn Probe 1 hour, 17 minutes ago SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Bush administration, seeking to revive an online p*rnography law struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, has subpoenaed Google Inc. for details on what its users have been looking for through its popular search engine. ADVERTISEMENT Google has refused to comply with the subpoena, issued last year, for a broad range of material from its databases, including a request for 1 million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period, lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department said in papers filed Wednesday in federal court in San Jose. Privacy advocates have been increasingly scrutinizing Google's practices as the company expands its offerings to include e-mail, driving directions, photo-sharing, instant messaging and Web journals. Although Google pledges to protect personal information, the company's privacy policy says it complies with legal and government requests. Google also has no stated guidelines on how long it keeps data, leading critics to warn that retention is potentially forever given cheap storage costs. The government contends it needs the data to determine how often p*rnography shows up in online searches as part of an effort to revive an Internet child protection law that was struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court on free-speech grounds. The 1998 Child Online Protection Act would have required adults to use access codes or other ways of registering before they could see objectionable material online, and it would have punished violators with fines up to $50,000 or jail time. The high court ruled that technology such as filtering software may better protect children. The matter is now before a federal court in Pennsylvania, and the government wants the Google data to help argue that the law is more effective than software in protecting children from p*rn. The Mountain View-based company told The San Jose Mercury News that it opposes releasing the information because it would violate the privacy rights of its users and would reveal company trade secrets. Nicole Wong, an associate general counsel for Google, said the company will fight the government's efforts "vigorously." "Google is not a party to this lawsuit, and the demand for the information is overreaching," Wong said.
Maybe this is a preventative measure to find out ahead of time how many in Congress have been looking at p*rn during the lunch hour.

Any bets if the people who enter child p*rn searches via Google will establish a "probable cause" for searches on all of their computers? Any bets if you have child p*rn pictures in your browser cache that you are facing a life sentence in a federal pen?
I guess all the names of FBI agents, social workers, and people in legal department will show up, even if they entered something like "study of child affected by p*rn" before.
Well if you keep voting GOP ,you will keep losing your freedom and privacy. The Bushies remind me more and more of the Taliban and the Iranian Mullahs.
The GOP is a good party, however, like a cancer we've allowed the neocons who are basically wolves in sheep clothing to take over the party's ideals, and perverted it. That's why Democrats aren't making any headway even with all these scandals, the ideology of the leadership of two groups right now are basically the same.
(I'll third that sentiment.) I think anyone griping about this is either missing the point or guilty of misconduct.
You agree that it is ok to sopoenae google to see if anyone Americans are looking at sites or doing anything illega? Without warrants? BTW child p*rn is disgusting; so is terrorism. So is violating our Constituional Rights to be free from warrantles search and seizure..
So the incompetence of Johnny Ashcroft lives... not so good at prosecuting terrorists real good at trying to catch physicians, people looking at naughty pictures, and statues' privates.
Argh, Jonny still needs to explain why he stopped traveling on commercial airlines in US prior to 9/11 from mid-summer of 2001.
There...fixed it for you. I'm not saying this is reasonable but I think you should quote the real protection afforded to us.
