Federal Gov't practicing age discrimination?

    I'm currently looking for work & have noticed that all the government jobs have an age requirement of 17-34 years of age. The Air Force had one that listed the age requirment as 17-27 years old. It's not that I'm looking to get a job with the government, but it sure seems to me that the government is practicing age discrimination. Why are there Federally mandated laws against this for private businesses, but the government turns right around & does exactly what they've passed laws against? It sounds to me like they need to take a long look in the mirror. Just because a person is over the age limit that they've set, doesn't mean they are unable to do the job. Being over 34 years of age, isn't old.

    you also have to be a certain age to run for president.....35, i think....

    THOSE BASTARDS!! I'M ONLY 23, BUT I CAN HANG WITH THOSE POLITICIANS!! :D :D

    Interesting question......i'm not sure i have an answer, other than maybe they have some sort of experience or physical ability rationalization for the jobs? Who knows....the gov't is WACKO.

    To join the military you must be between 17-35, I believe, with the various services having a 27-28 year-old cutoff for active duty. For the military, that of course makes sense...

    Is this for all federal jobs? I dunno about that. Something tells me they'll hire a 36 year old to man a window. I dunno...

    That's the government for you. They only make the laws...they don't have to follow them:eek:

    Actually, any company can put an age limit on its employees if they can prove the limit is for a job-related reason. So if a job has requirements that cannot be performed by most 34 year olds, the company is allowed to refuse to hire someone on the basis of their age.

    Shouldn't the reason given be something like, being physically unable to perform the job, instead of because of their age?

    I'm 42 & stronger than a lot of 20+ year olds. By them making a certain age a requirement for getting the job, then they are discriminating against age.

    How can they possibly know that an individual would be incapable of performing the task at hand, based purely on their age, without having ever seen them or given them the chance to prove themselves in the interview process?

    So what, if most people over the age of 34 couldn't handle the rigors of the job. Does that give anyone the right to make a blanket statement about a group of the population being unable to do the job, based on their age, race, gender, sexual preference, or whatever? I don't think so.

    I'm sure that most of you that follow pro football have heard the ignorant myth, that black men can't play the quarterback position, because they aren't smart enough. Imagine the firestorm that would've erupted if the NFL had made a requirement of only whites could play the quarterback position, because black men weren't smart enough. I apologize if this example offends anyone, it was just made to prove my point.

    Discrimination against anyone, based on averages or myths, without giving each individual a chance to prove they can't handle the job first, is still discrimination.

    I could give you more examples of government discrimination, but I'll get off my soapbox for now. :D
