Federal agency warns of radicals on right

The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity," saying the economic recession, the election of America's first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says.

The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, "The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned."

The nine-page document was sent to police and sheriff's departments across the United States on April 7 under the headline, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment."

It says the federal government "will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months" to gather information on "rightwing extremist activity in the United States."

The joint federal-state activities will have "a particular emphasis" on the causes of "rightwing extremist radicalization."

Homeland Security spokeswoman Sara Kuban said the report is one in an ongoing series of assessments by the department to "facilitate a greater understanding of the phenomenon of violent radicalization in the U.S."

The report, which was first disclosed to the public by nationally syndicated radio host Roger Hedgecock, makes clear that the Homeland Security Department does not have "specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence."It warns that fringe organizations are gaining recruits, but it provides no numbers.

The report says extremist groups have used President Obama as a recruiting tool.

I'm not sure what exactly is controversial here. We all know there are militia groups and supremicist groups and the like out there. And it wouldn't be surprising that their activity would increase when a Democrat (or a black person, in the case of the supremicist groups) is elected, just like left-wing group activity would increase if a Republican were elected. What exactly is surprising in this report?

Because concentration camps are next. It's all about Obama tearing away what we as a nation hold dear - our families, our freedoms, unbridled capitalism. next thing we know our children will be leaving at 5 years old to be indoctrinated in commie youth camps, and Republicans will be lined up and shot and dumped in mass graves. Obama is not only a Muslim terrorist, but also the biggest threat to God-fearing, America-loving men everywhere. Everybody pray - it looks like God is preparing us for the rapture.

    /per a chain e-mail I got a couple weeks ago.

If I could interrupt you two lovers for a moment....

What I am concerned about is a little thing called civil rights. You know that thing you liberals like to rail about so often. The Constitution, Bill of Rights and its ammendments clearly limit this type of intrustion yet here we see them doing it anyway.

    This is just a precursor.

People who fail at life will be sent to antifail centers for re-unfailification.

Gentlemen, please note the IP of the threadstarter for potential inclusion in Phase II.

Could you please articulate which civil rights you believe have been broken in the authoring of this report with specific examples from the report?

    TIA, etc.

    What intrusion?

    Nobody's getting locked up.

In my perfect world, they would be, but eh, can't have everything. I'm satisfied with communism and a Muslim president.

    Dude, lol.

I get frisked and patted down two times just trying to get to a Talib Kweli concert, I can't imagine how dumb this guy must be to be a smartass with what, 40 grand on him? Required by law? I have absolutely no sympathy for him. It gets to a certain point where you realize rights or not, you're going to get your ass handed to you if you're a 25-year old carrying 40 grand and you don't want to disclose why.

And I'm a good little suburb kid. yeesh.

Don't stop there....keep going back to radical groups of the 1960's and 1970's

Last time I checked there still was a tenth amendment

so if you oppose abortion you should be investigated?

if you are against illegal immigration you should be watched?
